City Council to reinforce traffic control system with new intelligent cameras to improve urban mobility

The installation of these devices makes it possible to apply new technologies to optimize traffic flow and take immediate action in the event of traffic jams or accidents.
The Estepona City Council will strengthen traffic control in the city with the expansion of the existing network of intelligent cameras with the aim of improving urban mobility. The Consistory will soon put out to tender the contract for the supply and installation of more than a hundred devices that will be integrated into the visualization, monitoring and traffic control system of Estepona.
The Consistory launched in 2023 a system of intelligent cameras for urban traffic control that was a pioneer in the province for the type of technology used. Now, this system will make a qualitative and quantitative leap, incorporating new surveillance devices with greater capacity and better performance, which will allow the application of new technologies for the improvement and flow of traffic and immediate action in case of traffic jams or accidents. The management of this system is carried out from the Control Center of the Local Police Headquarters, although it is also available to other Security Forces that require it.
The intelligent system allows the reading of license plates, geopositioning of the vehicles, to determine and categorize the characteristics of these, interconnect in real time, display, record and store all kinds of data and images and videos on a central server, which is located in one of the facilities of the City Council, which is accessed from the Local Police Headquarters in Estepona. In total, 110 new cameras will be placed in 80 points spread throughout the town and the suburbs.
In addition, the entire traffic video control network can be used to control and reduce the speed and density of traffic, so this tender includes the installation of a speed control point using approved radar, the location of which is yet to be defined. It will be accompanied by a system for capturing license plates onboard mobility, the transport of its data to the police control center, as well as the complaint management software with direct connection to the data of the General Directorate of Traffic in order to process the infractions that may arise.
The installation of all the elements of the traffic monitoring, visualization and control system will be carried out with the corresponding security measures included in the ENS (National Security Scheme), thus guaranteeing the secure transport of the information through the network, complying with the current legislation on security, as well as on personal data protection.
The contract will include, in addition to the supply and installation, the maintenance of all existing devices. The budget for the project is around 970,000 euros.
