City Council tenders works to double the exhibition space of the Archaeological Museum

New rooms will be set up on the upper floor to house dozens of pieces from the prehistoric, Roman and Islamic periods that have not been on display until now.

The reform of the museum also includes the remodeling of the central courtyard, carpentry, flooring and stairs, and the installation of an elevator.

The Estepona City Council has put out to tender the works for the comprehensive reform of the facilities of the Archaeological Museum of the city, equipment that will double the exhibition space. In this way, the new rooms that will be enabled on the top floor will allow the public to display dozens of archaeological pieces that have remained stored for lack of space.

The planned action will double the exhibition space currently available to the museum, opened a decade ago and located in a building built in the eighteenth century on a cistern belonging to a tower of the Muslim period. The intervention includes the demolition of part of the partition walls of the upper floor, which will leave open areas for new rooms.

The archaeological work that has been carried out in recent years, which has brought to light dozens of pieces that speak of the origins of the city of Estepona, makes it necessary to provide the museum with more rooms, so that these important remains can be displayed. Most of these pieces date from the prehistoric, Roman and Islamic periods, and only a small number have been exhibited so far in a temporary exhibition. The objective of this municipal project is that these collections have their definitive space within the museum.

The work, which is currently out to tender with a base price of 119,511.70 euros including VAT, includes other interventions that will involve a comprehensive remodeling of the facilities. Thus, the installation of an elevator is planned, with the consequent reform of the existing toilets on the first floor of the building. At the same time, other complementary actions will be carried out, such as the refurbishment of the flooring of the central courtyard, the refurbishment of the carpentry of the courtyard on the upper floor and the refurbishment of the flooring and stair treads.

Specifically, the upper floor carpentry facing the courtyard will be refurbished, by correcting the unevenness and replacing deteriorated ironwork. Also new sanding and lacquering of the same.

The building of the Archaeological Museum of Estepona consists of a first floor and two floors and is formed by a central courtyard where the cistern is located. On both floors there is an arcaded gallery around the central courtyard that distributes the different rooms. The installation of the elevator will entail the reform of the existing toilets on the first floor.

On the other hand, the flooring of the central courtyard will be renovated, eliminating the central fountain and leaving a flat floor, eliminating the current unevenness. The cistern will be left with its access opening in view, covering it with structural glass. The steps of the staircase will be rehabilitated, replacing the broken pieces and replacing the formation of the steps.

The execution period for the works has been initially set at six months, once the works have been awarded and the contract signed.
