Estepona inaugurates one of the largest promenades in Spain after the pedestrianization of the old N-340 highway
The remodeling project of Avenida España has made it possible to convert this road into a large boulevard for pedestrian use for almost two kilometers.
The Estepona City Council today inaugurates the new pedestrian boulevard in which the Avenida de España has been transformed along almost two kilometers long, thus creating one of the largest promenades in the country. The remodelling of this section of the old N-340 road – which crosses the city from east to west along the coastal strip – has been carried out in several phases and has made it possible to gain space for pedestrians, while completely changing the aesthetics of the environment.
This initiative, aimed at opening the ‘urban garden’ of the center of Estepona to the Mediterranean Sea, places Estepona at the forefront of sustainable cities that are committed to quality of life, the welfare of citizens, the environment and ample space for pedestrians.
In the specific case of Avenida España, a total surface area of 37,435 square meters and 1,565 meters in length has been worked on. The work has been carried out in sections: between Avenida de Andalucía and Calle Terraza; from Calle Terraza to Avenida Juan Carlos I; from Avenida Juan Carlos I to Calle Delfín; and from Calle Delfín to El Faro.
In this way, Estepona joins its urban core and the heart of its economic and social activity with the tourist attraction of the sea, with the consequent revitalization of this strategic enclave of the municipality.
The remodeling of Avenida España has also achieved a modern city concept that has another fundamental axis in the remodeled urban center of the city. In this regard, it should be remembered that in this area, during the last decade, has generated a network of more than 130 streets renovated in all of its infrastructure and beautified creating the powerful focus of urban revitalization that has meant the municipal initiative ‘Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol’.
The creation of this pedestrian boulevard was preceded by the creation of road infrastructures for alternative mobility, such as the creation of the northern ring road, which connects the urban center from its eastern access through the San José school to the northern area of the Parque Ferial-Auditorio-Athletics Stadium and its connection with the A7 highway.
In addition, a pioneering parking network has been created in the city at a cost of 1 euro per day for the user. This network has covered parking areas located in the heart of the city and on the outskirts of the historic center. In total, more than 2,000 new parking spaces have already been created.
For the inauguration, a full program of recreational activities has been scheduled, ranging from parades to free tastings and musical performances. Specifically, the events will begin at 20.00 hours with the ribbon cutting of authorities, which will take place at the junction between Avenida de España and Avenida de Andalucía. From 20.15 hours will start the circus parade that will be enlivened by brass band, batucada, flamethrowers, jugglers, stilt walkers, unicycles, clowns and trapeze artists.
In the Plaza Garcia Caparros has planned a free tasting of churros with chocolate, from 20.30 hours. From 21.00 to 22.00 hours will be activated happy hour with promotions in all establishments in the Avenida de España, Plazoleta Ortiz and Plaza García Caparros, which will offer products at special prices.
The musical performances will begin at 21.00 hours, in the Plaza García Caparrós, with a concert by Los Piratas. An hour later, the duo Azúcar Moreno will close the events planned for the inauguration of the remodeling of Avenida de España.
