The City Council begins the clearing campaign in the beds of some twenty rivers and streams to prevent flooding
Since the beginning of the year, the Consistory has also been cleaning rural roads, ditches and plots of land to prevent fires and visibility problems for drivers traveling on these roads.
The Estepona City Council reports that it has begun the campaign of clearing and pruning of the beds of about twenty streams and rivers that run through urban areas in the city, with the aim of preventing floods and fires.
The work, which began a few days ago in the area of Arroyo Judío, where the work has already been completed, is now focused on Arroyo Hornacino de Levante and Arroyo Hornacino de Poniente. Subsequently, work will be carried out in the streams El Saladillo, Cantarranas, El Taraje, La Galera, Las Abejeras, La Miel, Pantoja, Dos Hermanas, Antón, Las Cañas, Vaquero, En medio, and Los Polvitos.
The municipal workers will also intervene on the banks of the following rivers: Guadalobón, La Cala, Monterroso, Velerín and Padrón.
Thanks to these interventions carried out by the City Council every year, the obstacles that exist in the riverbeds and streams and that could prevent their normal drainage are eliminated. At the same time, the formation of blockages that could cause flooding in the event of heavy rainfall is avoided. The clearing of stream beds is also carried out with the intention of avoiding forest fires that could endanger the neighbors and the natural heritage of the municipality.
These clearing and pruning works have been resumed after the summer season, since the Junta de Andalucía urges not to act from spring and during the summer on the banks of rivers to respect the biological cycle that coincides with the laying of eggs of the fauna in the area. For this reason, all the work being carried out on the banks of streams and rivers have the required authorizations of the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment.
It is important to remember that the City Council only has powers to act in the channels that are in urban areas, corresponding to the Junta de Andalucía the maintenance of those that run in other areas of the municipality.
On the other hand, the City Council of Estepona continues to undertake works for the maintenance, cleaning and clearing of rural roads, ditches and plots. So far this year has acted more than 100 kilometers throughout the municipality.
The municipal operational brigade of Agriculture is responsible for carrying out these tasks, which are executed preventively throughout the year to prevent forest fires, incidences of heavy rainfall or visibility problems for drivers traveling on these roads.
Although the work is mainly focused on clearing and maintenance of the margins of roads, streams and rivers, the operational services of the City Council also carry out pavement repair work, maintenance of municipal plots and private land, where they are executed in a subsidiary manner.
