The City Council expands the ‘Free Books’ Network to promote reading with the installation of booths in the 13 public schools of Estepona

The Consistory reinforces this cultural initiative to promote book exchange outside educational centers
The City Council of Estepona informs that it has expanded the Network of Spaces of ‘Free Books’ with the installation of new booths at the entrance of the 13 public schools in the municipality. In these wooden booths, readers of any age can pick up or deposit books for free at any time of the day. In this way, the books can have more lives and readers, following the motto of this project, ‘Pick it up, read it and share it’.
With this action, the Consistory reinforces its commitment to the promotion of reading and access to culture, now bringing this initiative closer to the educational community.
The councilor attached to the area of Culture and Festivities, Macarena Diánez, stressed that this extension aims to promote the reading habit from an early age and encourage schoolchildren, families and teachers to participate in the exchange of books. “We want the children of Estepona grow up surrounded by books, understanding that reading can be shared and enjoyed in community,” he said.
The new booths, like the 10 that were installed in different parts of the town and the suburbs, are part of the network created last April under the slogan ‘Pick it up, read it and share it’. Each of them will allow users to deposit or pick up books freely, promoting reuse and free access to reading.
Diánez recalled that this network, which began with a dozen wooden houses located in places like the Plaza de las Flores, the Botanical Park-Orquidario or Paseo Marítimo, has had an excellent reception by the public, which has driven this second phase focused on schools and totaling 23 booths spread throughout the municipality.
Also, the municipal responsible has advanced that the City Council will continue supplying titles the new booths and will study future extensions to continue bringing reading to all neighborhoods of the municipality. “We want Estepona to be a city where books are available to everyone, in every park, in every square and now also in every school,” he concluded.
