The Estepona City Council maintains with water two ponds of the Palacio de Congresos and El Calvario park to preserve the existing fauna in these areas and after verifying that some species are in the nesting period. The Consistory is also carrying out cleaning, sanitation and water analysis to ensure the health of these animals, among which are different species of ducks, turtles and carp.
The Consistory has adopted this measure as an exception, while continuing without filling other ponds in the city in compliance with the drought decree in force. The objective is none other than to protect these animals in this time of intense heat. In addition, the City Council only has in operation some fountains in the city with closed water circuit, as established by the decree.
The El Calvario pond has a colony of turtles and carps. On the other hand, in the surroundings of the Palacio de Congresos a colony of different species of ducks has been located for decades, some of them are permanently settled at this point, while others usually seek refuge at certain times of the year. At this time, they are also in the nesting period.
During the winter and spring, as explained by the deputy mayor for Services and External Control, Blas Ruzafa, the four existing sheets in this pond of the Palacio de Congresos have been conserved with water that recirculate between them. With the arrival of summer and the restrictions imposed by the drought decrees, it has been decided to maintain two of these sheets to ensure the welfare of the animals.
In short, the aim of the City Council is to preserve the good habitat of the colonies of both carp and turtles in El Calvario, as well as the families of ducks in the pond of the Palacio de Congresos. To this end, systematic water quality controls will continue to be carried out to ensure that the animals are in perfect hygienic and sanitary conditions.
