The City Council regrets that the Government does not consider it urgent to regenerate some of the city’s main beaches

The central government has only made sand contributions in Padrón, Cabo Bermejo and El Cristo, but neglects the actions required by the Consistory in Guadalobón, El Ángel, El Pirata-Las Dunas, Benamara and Atalaya-Isdabe.
The City Council continues to claim to the central government the execution of definitive works to defend the coastline to ensure the stabilization and protection of the same against storms.
The City Council of Estepona regrets that the central government does not consider urgent to regenerate some of the main beaches of the municipality before the start of the summer season.
The Consistory has requested this year to the central government the execution of regeneration works in a total of seven beaches that during the winter months have suffered the effects of storms of rain, wind and strong waves. However, the central government has only attended the request for three of these beaches.
From the municipal area of Beaches was sent last March a letter to the Coastal Demarcation in which the report prepared by municipal technicians on the state of the beaches of the municipality of Estepona, and in which the need for urgent intervention for the regeneration of a total of seven points of the coast was exposed.
The report states that “the beaches alternate profiles of winter and summer, coinciding with seasonal periods of erosion and creation, ie, winter storms take the sand from the beach and in summer are rebuilt, the latter issue, which is not being met in some areas of the coast Estepona where there is a gradual regression of the profile of the coast.
The report also notes that all this “should be added to the effect of the proximity of the Sierra de Estepona to the beaches, which makes a large slope in little space is saved that causes the river beds are seasonally torrential, which means that these channels remain dry for much of the year, but at the time of rainfall become torrents that damage and damage the beaches in which they flow”.
By virtue of all the above and after the corresponding inspection, the technicians have determined the need to carry out regeneration tasks in Guadalobón, El Ángel, Padrón, El Pirata/Las Dunas/Cabo Bermejo/Menara, Benamara, Atalaya/Isdabe and El Cristo to smooth out the existing steps, increase the useful width lost due to erosion, and eliminate the excess of large stones. However, these actions have only been attended in Padrón, Cabo Bermejo and El Cristo.
From the municipal area of Beaches this intervention is considered insufficient, so the Consistory has been carrying out works for the adequacy of the coastline coinciding with the arrival of good weather and before the start of the high season of beaches and the activation of the surveillance service from next Saturday, June 15. These tasks have been added to the usual work of the brigades of the City Council for cleaning and screening of sand, and other actions to improve litter garbage cans and walkways and bathing modules.
From the City Council of Estepona has been claiming to the central government the execution of definitive works of defense of the coast that guarantee the stabilization and protection of the same one in front of the storms. These measures would prevent the loss of sand, damage to the profiles of the beaches and the problems that these storms cause in the sewage system or coastal infrastructure. This would also put an end to the periodic contributions of sand, which end up being temporary and ephemeral actions that do not solve this problem.
