The City Council tenders the comprehensive remodeling of one of its main shopping streets to integrate it into the pedestrian axis of the historic center.

The Terrace Street action, funded by the EU’s Next Generation recovery, transformation and resilience plan, will require an investment of 2.4 million euros.

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, today held a meeting with traders and residents of the area to publicize this project.

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, today presented the remodeling project of Terraza Street, one of the main arteries of the road network of the city for its commercial character. The alderman has held a meeting with merchants and neighbors of the environment to publicize this proposal that aims to a comprehensive transformation of the road to make it more accessible, safe and sustainable.

The mayor has indicated that the works are already tendered for 2.4 million euros. It will be an action framed in the call for aid for the strengthening of commercial activity in tourist areas funded by the Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Next Generation of the EU. Although the specifications have established a completion period of eight months, the contracting board of the Consistory will value the reduction in the expected duration of the works as a criterion for the bids to be submitted.

The project aims to recover the concept of the street, designing an efficient model in its route and operation, while revitalizing its use as the main artery of the historic center. To this end, we have opted for an intervention that gives pedestrian priority by executing a single platform that will provide a sense of spaciousness to the entire urban area, generating a uniform environment that will enhance the activity of the various services and facilities it includes.

The pedestrian is thus emphasized, improving environmental conditions and creating an environment that guarantees universal accessibility in urban mobility. In addition, the new project will renew the current pavement by incorporating safer materials for pedestrians and will unify the different levels of the road to reduce the risk of falling or tripping, creating continuity along its route.

Terraza street connects Andalucía avenue with España avenue, and the area of action contemplated runs along this road from Los Reales avenue towards the sea, crossing the historic heart of the city. Specifically, it will intervene in three phases on an area of about 8,668.45 square meters, whose approximate dimensions are 600 meters in length and between 10 and 20 meters in its cross-sectional area.

Among the main novelties of this project is the enhancement of such an emblematic space as the Virgen del Rocío square, which will become a more diaphanous and accessible space. In addition, it will increase the number of seating areas along this street so that passers-by can rest and enjoy this public space.

At the same time, the remodeling of this central street aims to promote it as a backbone of the city with environments conducive to ensuring a healthy life for all sectors of the population. Prioritizing pedestrian access to the road will facilitate mobility and urban sustainability by reducing emissions and favoring air quality and space for pedestrians.

The planned work also includes the renovation of the supply and sanitation infrastructures, the installation of new street lighting along the street, the installation of a structure of awnings to create shade, the presence of flush-fitting tree wells on the surface, reconditioning the existing tree species, street furniture, and the installation of new planters along the street at ground level for greater visual permeability and a sense of the whole. Surface parking lots are also eliminated, while respecting some loading and unloading zones. It should also be noted that the new design of the road will also allow access for emergency and security vehicles.

The intervention in Terraza Street is part of the project for the revitalization of the Old Town in which the Estepona City Council has been working for a decade, ‘Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol’, which has so far managed to integrate more than 130 streets, in all of them has opted for the conditioning of the spaces around the stores, with the aim of promoting and revitalizing social, commercial, cultural and leisure relations.
