The Estepona Town Hall will pay tribute to the writer Antonio Gala with a day of cultural activities that will delve into his work and his person. The tribute will take place next Tuesday, May 28, the first anniversary of the death of the author, who died in Cordoba on May 28, 2023 after a long illness.
The program will begin at 12:00 noon, in the Plaza Antonio Gala, Guadiana Street, 13, where the meeting ‘Theater and Truth’ will be held with the educational community and open to the public. In this event, there will be an introduction to the legacy of Gala.
The day will continue in the outdoor area of the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center, in the amphitheater, where the book ‘Poemas de lo irremediable’ will be presented, with unpublished poems by Antonio Gala. The event will start at 7:00 pm, with Luis Cardenas, Antonio Gala’s personal secretary for almost thirty years, and Pedro J. Plaza, writer and researcher. In 2021, he won the Malaga Research Award for his essay ‘The poet and the kaleidoscope: Multiple readings in “El poema de Tobías desangelado”, by Antonio Gala’.
In the same enclave, at 8:00 pm, will delve into the personality of the poet with Ben Clark and Maria Zaragoza, with the talk ‘Antonio Gala: personality and person’. Ben Clark (Ibiza, 1984), has just won the National Critics Award for his book ‘Demonios’ (Editorial Sloper). He also won the Hiperión and Loewe awards. He is a trustee of the Antonio Gala Foundation. The writer María Zaragoza (Madrid, 1982) will be speaking alongside the Ibizan poet. With her latest book ‘La biblioteca de fuego’ (Planeta) she won the Azori’n Novel Prize 2022. In 2023, La Junta de Comunidades de Castilla la Mancha named her adopted daughter.
The tribute will conclude at 21:00 in the Auditorium of the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center, where the multidisciplinary artist Ernesto Artillo will present the work ‘Gala literal’, a piece composed with testimonies of Antonio Gala about love at different stages of his life. Between the theatrical and the performative, showing the actuality of his reflections. Love as an idea and as an experience, love as recognition of an anonymous public to the artist or as intimate and close correspondence. Various loves: to work, to family, to animals, to strangers. Ironic love or literal love. Literal gala.
Admission to all events will be free until full capacity is reached.
