Antonio Aguilar Sánchez. Born in Estepona, his primary school teacher was Mr. Ramón García, and later he studied Bachillerato at the then Academia Juan XXIII, and Bachillerato Superior at the Colegio de Jesuitas Portaceli in Seville. In 1977 he graduated in History and Geography at the University of Malaga. In 1995 he received his doctorate in Hispanic Philology, and since 2000 he has been Professor of Spanish Language and Literature. He has been Honorary Collaborating Professor at the University of Malaga and has also belonged to various research groups of the Junta de Andalucía.
As a researcher, he has specialized in contemporary Spanish poetry and has published more than a dozen titles dedicated to the most current poetry, from the poetic work of Luis A. de Villena or Salvador Rueda to poetry written by women. And as a playwright, he has premiered two plays at the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga, ‘Divino patrón’ and ‘Isabel es nombre de reina’.
He has spent almost all of his professional career in Malaga (although he has also lived in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Paris), but he has never lost his connection with Estepona, his hometown, where he has always enjoyed its people, its traditions and its sweet, cheerful summers.
In 1994 he was the town crier of the Holy Week of Estepona, in 1995 he made the Exaltation of the Virgen de los Remedios and in 2021 he was the exalter of the Virgen del Carmen. And he has always boasted of being from Estepona (his father, Antonio Aguilar, the practitioner, was always very close to the Fishermen’s Brotherhood, where he was well known and appreciated).
