The National Ballet of Cuba arrives at the Felipe VI Auditorium with the classical work ‘Giselle’.

The performance of this pure and fundamental piece of classical dance will take place on Friday, April 19 at 8:00 p.m.

The Estepona City Council informs that the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC), led by its director, the dancer Viengsay Valdés, will arrive next Friday, April 19, at 20.00 hours, at the Felipe VI Auditorium, with ‘Giselle’, one of the most emblematic works of the classical ballet repertoire.

Captivating ballet, where a beautiful and fragile young Giselle dies after suffering a heartbreak. Dying maiden will become a night spirit of the forest, a Wili. One night, when her beloved Duke Albrecht is punished by the Willis in the forest, Giselle, showing her eternal love, will save her lover by protecting him from Myrtha, the Queen of the Willis.

‘Giselle’ is a ballet in two acts with music by Adolphe Adam, choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, and libretto by Théophile Gautier and Jules-Henri Vernoy, based on the play De l’Allemagne (1835) by Heinrich Heine. Considered as an absolute masterpiece of the dance theater of Romanticism, the work was premiered in 1841 at the Paris Opera, becoming a pure and fundamental piece of classical dance, both for the dramatism of the romantic ideals, as for the use of the most refined theatrical technique of the nineteenth century.

The Ballet Nacional de Cuba is the island’s most important classical dance company, which emerged in 1948 under the name of choreographer and teacher Alicia Alonso, who died at the age of 98 in 2019. In 2018, the BNC was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

Within its repertoire, ‘Giselle’ possesses significant importance, not only in terms of its own history, but also because with this work and with Alicia Alonso, its exceptional interpreter, Cuba transcends for the first time in the international field of dance.

Tickets are on sale at tafestepona.com, at Agencia López, Avda. Juan Carlos I, 11, Tfno.: 952800441, and at the box office, from two hours before the performance.
