City Council installs signage at river fords to reinforce road safety

The Consistory places signs to warn and inform users about the presence of flood fords in eight rivers and streams of the municipality.

The Estepona City Council informs that it has installed vertical signage in flood ford areas in rivers and streams of the municipality to reinforce road safety. The purpose of the new signs is to warn and inform users of these roads of the risks of accidents in case of flooding in these enclaves.

In the first phase of this action, more than twenty preventive signs have been installed in several points of Arroyo Enmedio, Arroyo Guadalobón, Arroyo La Cala, Río Monterroso, Río El Padrón, Río El Castor, Río El Velerín and Río Guadalmansa.

The Consistory will continue to install in a second phase more warning signs to drivers in other fords of rivers and streams. In addition, the possibility of implementing other safety measures such as the installation of barriers or traffic cameras is being studied.

At present, several roads cross rivers or streams by means of fords, which means that traffic drives over the riverbed (earth or aggregate) or over submersible concrete or asphalt structures. During rainy periods, the water level rises, making passage impossible and creating the danger of dragging vehicles.

Although these fords are usually used and crossed by neighbors who live in these rural areas or have a second home here, it is important to remind them of the risks of using them when there is rainfall and rising water levels. Therefore, the signage will be placed at points where there is a higher intensity of vehicular traffic.

Vertical signs will also be installed in rural areas where visibility or driver awareness of the ford may be low.

The signs, which will be placed on both banks of rivers and streams, are approved and weather resistant, with high intensity reflectivity to ensure that they can be seen at night.

Likewise, Civil Protection and Local Police will continue to organize devices and preventive closures in these enclaves when relevant weather warnings occur.
