The Estepona Town Hall informs that the Botanical Orchid Park of Estepona participates in three botanical events in Portugal and Andalusia.

Last weekend the Estepona Orchidarium was invited to the annual orchid exhibition organized by the Clube dos Orquidófilos de Portugal at the Lisbon Zoo. The Botanical-Orchidarium Park had its own stand with a display of orchids and detailed information about the species in its facilities.

The curator of the Botanical-Orchidarium Park, Manuel Lucas, explained that the fair included a series of workshops and conferences on the exciting world of orchids. “It was a busy weekend, as thousands of people toured the fair and many of them came to our stand to see the specimens we have in Estepona,” said Lucas.

In addition to having his own stand, Manuel Lucas gave two conferences at the Lisbon exhibition. The first was ‘Orchid hunters of the nineteenth century, a rescue from oblivion’, in which he focused on “rescuing the actions of a number of orchid hunters around the world, and that thanks to that scientific and adventurous spirit, today we can count on orchid species that otherwise would not have been discovered”.

The following lecture ‘Myrmecophilia in orchids’, which was the subject of interest for several specialized European magazines, dealt with the relationship between ants and orchids, an issue that has been little researched so far.

The curator of the Botanical-Orchidarium Park has highlighted the importance of being present in this type of botanical events because it makes known the variety of species that houses this facility. In this regard, he explained that several European groups of orchidophiles have shown their intention to visit Estepona to learn and study their most important species.

Moreover, representatives of the Orchid Park of Estepona are invited this weekend as a jury in the XXIV Fiesta de los Patios Portuenses del Puerto de Santa Maria. In addition, Manuel Lucas will be present this weekend at the First Orchid Festival of Jimera de Líbar, where he will offer the conference ‘Orchidiocia, the strange seduction of orchids’, while reporting on the species that are part of the collection of Estepona.

Within the I Orchid Festival of Jimera de Líbar there will also be other activities such as the search for wild orchids and gastronomic workshops with extracts of orchids as well known as vanilla.
