Mayor highlights the physical and mental benefits that the ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’ program generates in users

Active Seniors: Healthy Living’ brings together and expands the services offered by the Estepona Town Hall to promote healthy active aging.

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, today held a meeting with participants of the municipal program ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’. The City Council launched last October this program that aims to promote healthy active aging, improving the quality of life and physical and mental well-being of this group.

With this action has strengthened the care and services that had been offered from the Consistory to the elderly of the city. The program of the municipal delegation of Social Welfare, through the Area of the Elderly, proposes physical, cognitive, social and cultural activities for people over 65 years to prevent social isolation, promote personal autonomy and improve the quality of life.

Thus, a complete program of activities and services has been designed to increase social cohesion and integration of this group, prevent diseases associated with sedentary lifestyles and isolation, promote physical activity adapted to the participants, socialization and healthy habits, as well as stimulation of memory, attention and other cognitive functions, implementing games for the duration of the main activity.

The program includes weekly physical exercise sessions to promote mobility and physical and mental health, talks on healthy eating and disease prevention to promote the adoption of the Mediterranean diet and proper nutritional habits, and organized outings to natural environments and adapted hiking trails, both natural areas and emblematic places in the municipality of Estepona (coastal corridor, promenade, etc.). Thus, it has also opted for hiking activities adapted to the profile of the participant, including adapted routes through natural environments, prioritizing safety and enjoyment of the environment (Sierra Bermeja, Los Pedregales Natural Park, environments Padrón River, La Cala River, as well as walks along the different beaches of the municipality). Given the success of these active walks, the City Council has expanded them to two weekly, Monday and Friday. In these walks the company Frutas Acosta collaborates with the delivery of pieces of fruit to all attendees.

There have also been organized walks with cultural visits to monuments, museums and places of interest within the municipality, giving to know directly the history of Estepona through, in addition, information brochures or tourist guide.

It also offers a dynamic group program to strengthen emotional well-being and self-esteem, creating a motivating and participatory environment.

With this initiative, the City Council reaffirms its commitment to active aging policies, promoting meeting spaces that reinforce the integration and vitality of the elderly.

Finally, it should be noted that the Geriatric Cabinet offers other weekly activities such as the Memory Workshop, Art Therapy, Numbers Workshop, Letter Workshop, Recipes and Dictionary of Estepona and Reading Club.

Participation in these activities requires prior registration. For more information, those interested can contact the Geriatric Office, at 168 Terraza St. Also, call 952792602, or send an e-mail to: geriatrico@estepona.es.
