The Consistory names María Miralles, pioneer in equality policies; the guitarist José Fernández and the professor and historian Francisco Medina as Favorite Sons of Estepona.

Favorite Sons and Daughters of Estepona

The Estepona City Council agreed last week in plenary to award the titles of Favorite Sons of Estepona to the former councilor María Miralles, the guitarist José Fernández, and the professor and historian Francisco Medina.

María Miralles has been a pioneer in equality policies, promoting the creation of the Women’s Information Center and offering direct and close support to victims of gender violence. At the same time, she developed an intense cultural and associative activity as director and writer of the theater group of the Peñas Blancas Women’s Association.

José Fernández is an outstanding flamenco guitarist whose artistic and teaching career has contributed significantly to the dissemination of flamenco at an international level. Throughout his career, he has accompanied renowned flamenco singers and dancers, and has successfully toured internationally. At the same time, he has developed an outstanding teaching work, training generations of guitarists who today enjoy great recognition.

Francisco Medina has been director of IES Monterroso and a mathematics teacher much loved by several generations of Esteponeros. After his retirement, he has developed a facet as a writer of works where he collects episodes of the history of Estepona. In addition, it should be noted his altruistic work with the association Parkinson Sol, with which he collaborates assiduously.
