The City Council of Estepona reports that it has created a Network of Spaces of ‘Free Books’ with the aim of promoting reading through the exchange of works. The councilor attached to the area of Culture and Festivals, Macarena Diánez, has indicated that the Consistory has installed a dozen wooden houses in different parts of the town and the suburbs for readers to collect or deposit books for free.
Under the slogan ‘Pick it up, read it and share it’, the City Council aims to encourage reading and books have a second life. Thus, Díanez explained that citizens can use these spaces at any time of the year both to leave books that they consider should be read by others, and to find works deposited by others.
The points chosen for this initiative are as follows. In the town center have been installed in the Plaza de Las Flores, in the Botanical Park-Orquidario, two in the Paseo Marítimo, in the Parque de Las Mesas and the Central Park. In the suburbs have been located in Cancelada, Isdabe, Nueva Atalaya and the playground of Arroyo Enmedio.
The municipal responsible has indicated that the City Council will also be supplying books these spaces and has advanced that more points may be installed if the initiative is well received. On the other hand, she has encouraged citizens to participate in this new cultural project because it will give a second life to books that have already been read and remain on the shelves at home. In addition, he hopes that participants will exchange books of different genres and for different ages, as it is important that different generations get involved with this original initiative.
This network, which will begin operating tomorrow on the occasion of Book Day, will bring reading to passers-by, as the wooden houses have been located in public spaces especially busy throughout the year.
