The City Council informs that the ordinance regulating the use of electric scooters comes into force tomorrow.

The document includes the regulations of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) to ensure road safety and coexistence between users of these vehicles, pedestrians and cars.

The City Council of Estepona informs that tomorrow, April 8, enters into force the Regulatory Ordinance on Circulation and use of Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMV).

The new ordinance aims to promote road safety and ensure that the circulation of Personal Mobility Vehicles is carried out in an adapted and safe way, making it compatible with the different uses of public roads; as well as establishing the conditions of use of this type of vehicles clarifying the requirements for circulation, and establishing the framework of the sanctioning power in the matter.

The document includes the regulations of the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) to guarantee road safety and coexistence between users of these vehicles, pedestrians and cars. The ordinance also includes aspects such as the fact that, since January 2, it is compulsory for owners to have liability insurance for VMPs, as well as the manufacturer’s certificate of circulation.

Users of this type of vehicle must be over 16 years of age and must wear an approved helmet at all times. It is forbidden to use cell phones or headphones while driving VMPs.

The ordinance also makes it mandatory for drivers of these vehicles to always respect signals, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. In the event that they have to cross crosswalks, users must get out of the vehicle to do so.

The ordinance also states that they are not allowed to drive on the sidewalk. VMPs can only circulate on the roadway or bike lanes, and their drivers will have to signal their maneuvers with their arm, in case they do not have turn signals.

The maximum speed will be 25 kilometers per hour on streets with sidewalks, 20 kilometers per hour on roads without sidewalks and 10 kilometers per hour in those areas that are expressly marked.

These vehicles may not be driven under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and may only be used by one person.

The ordinance also recommends the use of appropriate footwear that holds the foot well and guarantees control of the vehicle, as well as the use of reflective vests.

The Local Police will impose sanctions to those who do not comply with the measures contemplated in the new ordinance.

On the other hand, to reiterate that the ordinance prohibits the circulation of these vehicles in pedestrian areas. For this reason, vertical signage was installed on the Paseo Marítimo and the main shopping streets of the city (Terraza and Real streets). This prohibition is also included in the Traffic Regulations of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

This ordinance is committed to improving road safety, new modes of mobility, clean energy and peaceful coexistence of its citizens.
