The Estepona City Council promotes a program of mediation of conflicts between peers in the IES Mediterraneo

The main objective of the MediEmos program is to improve the climate of coexistence in schools through the knowledge and implementation of strategies for negotiation, regulation and peaceful resolution of conflicts among peers.
The Estepona City Council reports that this week has begun in the IES Mediterráneo the MediEmos program, a training initiative focused on mediation of conflicts between equals.
The project is aimed at students who will form the mediating team of the school, and will play a key role in improving school coexistence. During the month of March, the participating group will complete 16 hours of training, distributed in eight two-hour sessions in the afternoon.
The program is provided by Horizonte Proyecto Hombre, a non-profit organization with more than forty years of experience in prevention, socio-emotional education and support for young people and families. Recognized as a Public Utility entity, it provides a methodology based on participation, dialogue and practical learning, fundamental for a constructive approach to conflicts in the educational environment.
The implementation of MediEmos is possible thanks to funding from the municipal delegation of Youth, which makes it possible to offer the training completely free of charge. The Councilor for Youth, Julia Simón, clarifies that “this support enables the benefits of the program reach both the student mediator (direct beneficiaries) and the whole educational community, including other students, teachers and families”.
MediEmos incorporates a protocol that teaches students how to accompany two people in conflict so that they can dialogue, express their needs and find joint solutions. This structure makes it possible to implement a mediation service in the center itself, making it an accessible resource for any student who needs support to manage disagreements peacefully.
School mediation addresses common conflicts in the daily life of students, such as misunderstandings and different perceptions about the same situation; rumors or comments that deteriorate coexistence; tensions between classmates; communication difficulties; discussions arising from group work or disagreements about responsibilities; or conflicts related to unexpressed needs, interests or emotions.
Through this process, the parties involved learn to listen to each other, understand each other and seek balanced solutions. This reduces the escalation of tensions, promotes cooperative attitudes and contributes to a safer, calmer and more respectful school climate.
In addition, the program enhances the acquisition of essential skills in the educational context, such as active listening, empathy, emotional regulation and effective communication, and fosters fundamental values such as mutual respect, cooperation, responsibility and active involvement in building a positive coexistence.
With the start of this program, IES Mediterráneo continues to move towards a model of coexistence based on student participation and the use of dialogue as the main tool for dealing with disagreements. The implementation of the mediation service will consolidate practices that reinforce the cohesion of the center and the well-being of the entire educational community.
The development of MediEmos throughout the month of March is an important step in the promotion of a culture of peace and the continuous improvement of the school climate.
