Estepona celebrates the Nordic Countries Day within the program for the promotion of foreign residents’ integration

This activity, which will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Avenida de España (from the European Union traffic circle to the Peseta monument), is part of the ‘Sharing Cultures’ initiative.

The deputy mayor of the Extraradio area, Begoña Ortiz, and the president of the Nordic Estepona Association, Ulf Hedendshl, today presented the Nordic Countries Day, a new activity framed in the program ‘Sharing Cultures’, which will give the opportunity to learn about the culture of Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark.

The mayor has reported that the event will be held this Saturday, from 17.00 to 21.00 hours, on Avenida de España, between the traffic circle of the European Union and the monument to La Peseta. During the day, as explained by the municipal responsible, visitors will be offered a unique insight into the Nordic culture, tasting food and typical Scandinavian drinks, as well as entertainment, dance games and music for both children and adults.

Also, Begoña Ortiz said that several stands will be installed with food from different countries, there will be performances of dance and music, through which the union of the two cultures will be represented. In addition, children will have a stand where they can play with Lego constructions and a ‘fish pond’ where they can fish for sweets and typical Scandinavian toys.

Estepona has 135 different nationalities and, in particular, with more than 1,350 registered residents of Nordic origin, “so for this government team is very important and necessary to celebrate these festivities of integration, which aims to strengthen ties with our foreign neighbors,” said the councilor.

During the day will be presented the Olive of the Year Award, which gives the Nordic community to those individuals and institutions that have helped them to integrate into the city, and this year will go to the Club Deportivo Estepona.

For his part, the president of the Nordic Estepona Association, Ulf Hedendshl, announced that among the scheduled performances are the municipal dance academy, with the teacher Mariví Rodríguez, and Claudia Ramírez ‘La Maravilla’; in addition to the Swedish International School choir; the tenor Fredrik de Jounge, who has performed on opera stages throughout Europe; and the composer Helene Wish, very popular in Sweden during the 90s and who has participated in major television programs. The typical Finnish dance, the jenkka, will also be performed, in which all attendees will be invited to participate. To end the party, attendees will enjoy the Tribute to the famous Swedish group ABBA.

The gastronomic section will include, among other typical products, Norwegian salmon, Danish sausages and Swedish herring. The food will be served in a tapa format, which will be priced at 1 euro.

Ulf Hedendahl has emphasized the satisfaction of the association’s members at such an event. “We are honored to have the opportunity to organize this event, to thus make known to the citizens of Estepona Nordic culture.” He has also expressed his gratitude to the City Council “for the support and appreciation they have shown towards the Nordic community”.
