The City Council will plant more than 400,000 flower specimens to beautify green areas during the spring-summer campaign.

Estepona exceeds 800,000 square meters of public green space, an increase of 60 percent since 2012.

Estepona City Council reports that it will plant more than 400,000 specimens of different species of flowers and shrubs during the spring-summer campaign. The deputy mayor of the area of Services and External Control, Blas Ruzafa, has indicated that the Parks and Gardens workers began these works several weeks ago and will continue until August, with the aim that the green areas of the city offer its best image during the months in which concentrates the largest number of visitors and tourists.

Ruzafa explained that all these plants come from the municipal nursery, which considerably reduces the costs that would involve an action of beautification of these characteristics.

The plantations are being carried out in the main avenues, promenade, access to the city and squares of the town, as well as in the suburbs, and among the species include lobelias, begonias, marigolds, petunias, tagetes, impatiens, zinnias, red celosias and pelargoniums, among others. He also explained that those responsible for the municipal nursery continue to study what new species to incorporate into municipal gardens, so they perform tests with various types of plants to see where they develop more easily.

Ruzafa stressed that this spring planting stands out, above all, because “it includes colorful plants and colorful compositions in different public spaces.” In this sense, the mayor thanked the municipal gardeners for the work they do in parks and gardens, “as they strive to make designs and combinations that manage to capture the attention of passers-by.”

The municipal responsible considers that “the project Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol has become a hallmark of the city, and the planting of flowering species are essential to further beautify the green areas of Estepona”. In addition, he pointed out that one of the objectives is that Estepona remains one of the Spanish cities with the most well-kept public gardens,

He has also recalled that Estepona exceeds 800,000 square meters of public green areas, which represents an increase of 60 percent since 2012. This has resulted in the city doubling the national average of square meters of green areas per inhabitant.

This commitment of the City Council to provide more green areas to the city and to beautify them every season with thousands of flowers has earned it the top award in five editions of the ‘Andalucía en Flor’ awards, which are given by the Asociación Multisectorial de la Jardineria Andaluza (AMJA). In addition, in 2023 it also received the V ‘Málaga Viva’ Award, organized by the Diputación de Málaga, for good municipal practices to promote sustainable and innovative development policies against climate change.
