The City Council begins work to double the exhibition space of the Municipal Archaeological Museum

New rooms will be set up on the upper floor to house dozens of pieces from the prehistoric, Roman and Islamic periods, which until now have not been on display. The renovation of the museum also includes the remodeling of the central courtyard, carpentry, flooring and stairs, and the installation of an elevator.
The Estepona City Council reports that work has begun on the comprehensive reform of the facilities of the Municipal Archaeological Museum, equipment that will double the exhibition space. In this way, the new rooms that will be enabled on the top floor will allow to show the public dozens of archaeological pieces that have remained stored until now due to lack of space.
The planned action will double the exhibition space currently available to the museum, which opened a decade ago and is located in a building built in the eighteenth century on a cistern belonging to a tower of the Muslim period. The intervention includes the demolition of part of the partition walls of the upper floor, which will leave open areas for new rooms.
The archaeological works that have been carried out in recent years, which have brought to light dozens of pieces that speak of the origins of the city of Estepona, make it necessary to provide the museum with more rooms, so that these important remains can be shown to the public. Most of these pieces date from the prehistoric, Roman and Islamic periods, and only a small number have been exhibited so far in a temporary exhibition. The objective of this new municipal project is that these collections have their definitive space within the museum.
The work, which has an investment of 97,999 euros (VAT included), includes other interventions that will involve a comprehensive remodeling of the facilities. Thus, the installation of an elevator is planned, with the consequent reform of the existing toilets on the first floor of the building. At the same time, other complementary actions will be carried out, such as the reform of the flooring of the central courtyard, which will be at the same level and where the fountain will be removed. The cistern will be left with its access opening in view, covering it with structural glass.
On the other hand, the carpentry on the upper floor overlooking the courtyard will be rehabilitated, by correcting the unevenness and replacing deteriorated ironwork. It is even planned to sand and lacquer them again. Also, the stair treads will be renewed, replacing the broken pieces and replacing the formation of the steps.
The building of the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Estepona consists of a first floor and two floors and is formed by a central courtyard where the cistern is located. On both floors there is an arcaded gallery around the central courtyard that distributes the different rooms. The installation of the elevator will entail the refurbishment of the existing toilets on the first floor. The execution period for the works has been initially set at six months.
