The City Council organizes a workshop on the prevention of domestic accidents for senior citizens within the program ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’.

This training activity aims to encourage autonomy and safety in the home, promoting preventive habits that reduce the risk of domestic accidents.

The Estepona City Council informs that the area of the Elderly together with Local Police will give the workshop ‘Your house, your home. Prevention of domestic accidents’, a training day aimed at older people in the municipality and included in the program ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’.

The main objective of the workshop is to promote autonomy and safety at home and will be taught by officers of the Local Police of Estepona. The intention is to help the elderly to identify the main domestic risks and to adopt preventive measures to help reduce accidents, especially falls, which are one of the most frequent incidents in this group.

The councilman of the Mayor, Daniel García Ramos, said that “most accidents suffered by the elderly occur in the home, so prevention is essential” and stressed that “such workshops help to identify everyday risks and to adopt simple measures that allow people to live at home with greater security, confidence and autonomy”.

During the day, which will last three hours, practical and accessible information will be offered on the most common risks in the domestic environment, such as insufficient lighting, the presence of obstacles, the use of inappropriate footwear, dizziness, distractions or the effects of certain medications. In addition, participatory dynamics will be developed to allow attendees to share experiences and recognize everyday hazards in their own homes.

The workshop will also address the detection of risks by rooms, specifically analyzing areas such as the bathroom, kitchen, corridors, stairs, bedroom, living room or terrace. In this sense, practical prevention strategies will be offered, such as the use of support bars, anti-slip mats, adequate lighting, the order of the space or the correct signaling of possible risks, including those less obvious such as pets, radiators, extreme temperatures or cleaning products.

Another block will be dedicated to the promotion of safe habits and active mobility, with the performance of simple exercises to improve balance and strength, as well as recommendations to incorporate safe routines in daily life, such as getting up slowly, checking medication or maintaining attention in daily tasks. They will also be assisted in the use of technical aids and technologies, such as smoke or gas detectors, SOS bracelets, canes and walkers.

At the end of the activity, participants will have to draw up an individual home improvement plan, identifying practical and immediate changes and so-called “safe corners” within their own home. In addition, informative triptychs will be handed out with a checklist and recommendations to continue applying prevention measures at home.

With this workshop, the Estepona City Council continues to reinforce its commitment to active and healthy aging policies, promoting the participation of the elderly, their personal autonomy and improving their quality of life through training and preventive actions included in the program ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’.
