The City Council requests permits for a well water desalination plant in view of the drought.

This infrastructure is expected to be operational in the spring and will provide 2,900 cubic meters of drinking water to the supply network. At the same time, the Consistory continues to make progress in the process for the installation of a portable seawater desalination plant in the area of El Castor.

The Estepona City Council is making progress in emergency actions in the face of the serious drought situation. Within the actions that are being carried out for this purpose, the Consistory has already sent to the Junta de Andalucía documentation to obtain the necessary authorizations for the implementation of a well water desalination plant to obtain water resources for municipal water supply.

Specifically, the City Council has proposed to authorize the execution of brackish water collection boreholes at the mouth of the river Padrón, for the supply of the municipality in this water emergency situation. This infrastructure, which is expected to be in operation in spring, will provide a volume of drinking water of 2,900 cubic meters per day to the municipal network, which will mean a reinforcement of 11% of the city’s supply.

In the same way, the Estepona City Council continues with the process of obtaining the authorizations for the installation of a containerized seawater desalination plant, in the area of the river El Castor, with a system of photovoltaic power supply panels. This is a water treatment plant that reduces costs and implementation time as it consists of prefabricated modules. It contemplates an original production of 20,000 cubic meters per day, expandable in the future to 30,000 cubic meters per day.

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, explained that these are priority and necessary actions to guarantee the supply to the population and to preserve the local economy.

These emergency actions, along with others planned, are part of the Water Infrastructure Works Plan approved by the Estepona City Council last December in plenary session.
