The Estepona City Council informs that next March 9, from 09.30 am, will be held at the facilities of the Hotel Ona Valle Romano Golf & Resort in Estepona the ‘III Day of Women and Chess’, with the participation of the FIDE Master Maria Eizaguerri, one of the great references of women’s chess in Spain.
The chess player from Huesca is Spanish U18 Absolute Champion in 2021, Spanish Absolute Rapid Chess Champion in 2022 and representative with the Spanish women’s team in the 44th Chess Olympiad held in India in 2022. She is also the youngest player in Spain to obtain the title of FIDE Master, and with an honorable mention to the best sportswoman in school age, awarded by the Consejo Superior de Deportes in 2022.
The Women and Chess Day is organized by the Villa de Estepona Chess Club (CAVE), in collaboration with the Estepona City Council, the Andalusian Chess Federation and the Chess Delegation of Malaga, and aims to promote and encourage the practice of chess at all levels and, especially, in the group of women.
During the first part, María Eizaguerri will give a lecture in which she will analyze the keys of the traditional imbalance between sexes in the practice of chess, since only one out of ten federated players is a woman. According to data from the International Chess Federation (FIDE), there are 156,134 active female players in the world. This means that 16.1% of the people who compete in this sport are women. In Spain, the percentage is reduced to 10.8%, one out of ten.
The second part of the Day will include, among other activities, a simultaneous chess game, also in charge of the FM María Eizaguerri.
The registration is free and open to all the public, and can be done by sending an e-mail to icavestepona@gmail.com indicating name, surname and date of birth.
