The City Council will leave the inherited debt at 24 million euros at the end of this year.

In a decade, the Consistory has paid off more than 90% of the 304 million in debt it inherited from the socialist period in the municipal government.

The Estepona City Council reports that the municipal debt inherited from previous governments will be reduced to 24 million euros by the end of this year.

At the moment the Consistory has already reduced its bank debt to 27 million. Specifically, as of May 29 last year, the amount stood at 27,106,338 million euros.

The Plenary of the City Council of Estepona has given account today of two reports of the Municipal Comptroller and the Municipal Treasury with the debit balance as of 31-12-2022 and 31-12-2023. These documents reflect the agility in fulfilling the obligations of the Consistory in terms of the payment of the inherited debt that in the totality of concepts reached 304 million euros, of which more than 90% has been paid, leaving only bank debt.

The important rhythm of amortization that has been carried out by the current government team of this inherited debt has also allowed considerable savings to the municipal coffers by avoiding the payment of the interest it generates.

In the last 13 years, the 60 million of inherited debt with the Social Security Treasury have been completely settled, as well as the debt for all the unaccounted invoices, the so-called ‘invoices in the drawers’ (33 million euros) and the inherited debt with the Junta de Andalucía for the improper or unjustified use of subsidies granted by the autonomous administration to the previous socialist government (6 million euros) was paid in full.

In addition, the debt also inherited with the Tax Agency (18 million euros) was paid in full, and the debt inherited with the concessionaire of the water service was paid in full (8 million euros).

Application for an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC)

On the other hand, the Plenary of the Estepona Town Council has unanimously agreed to request the Andalusian Government to declare the San Isidro Labrador Chapel, located in the Los Pedregales Park, an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).
