Estepona celebrates the X Solidarity Walk ‘Darkness into Light’ for suicide awareness and prevention

It will take place this Saturday, May 10, starting at 06.00 am with departure from the Paseo Marítimo (Malva Beach beach bar). The proceeds will go to help people at risk of suicide and their families.

The councilman attached to the delegation of Sport, Luis Gil and the representative of the Foundation ‘Pieta House’, Michael Ohalloran, and the president of the Association of Families and People with Mental Illness of the Costa del Sol (AFESOL), Cristian Gonzalez, today presented the solidarity march ‘Darkness into Light’, to be held in Estepona and in different parts of the world, this Saturday, May 10.

The municipal representative has encouraged citizens to collaborate in this solidarity activity that raises funds each year for awareness and suicide prevention programs, as well as for the intervention and accompaniment of people who have suffered in their environment the loss of a loved one due to this cause.

For his part, the president of AFESOL, Cristian Gonzalez, thanked the City Council for the sensitivity shown with this issue and the support offered each year to this initiative. In addition, he explained that the activity will consist of a solidarity walk of 5 kilometers along the Paseo Marítimo, from the beach bar Malva Beach to the Mirador del Carmen. The march will begin at 06.00 hours when it is still dark and ends with the light of day, symbolizing the path from darkness to light that people at risk of suicide walk.

Also, Michael Ohalloran explained that ‘Darkness into Light’ was born in Dublin 16 years ago promoted by the foundation ‘Pieta House’. In 2024 it achieved the participation of more than 160,000 people around the world. In addition, he has insisted on the importance of continuing to support this initiative, since in 2023 the data published by the National Institute of Statistics pointed out suicide as one of the main external causes of mortality in Spain.

Registration can already be done online, through the web: www.darknessintolight.ie or at the Afesol Salud Mental offices in Benalmádena and Estepona.
