Estepona City Council demands that the Government build a new police station on the land it ceded to the Ministry of the Interior five years ago.

The Plenary unanimously approved unanimously to urge the central government to provide the city with more resources and more National Police officers
The Plenary of the City Council of Estepona today unanimously approved unanimously to urge the central government to build a new police station as soon as possible on the land that the Consistory already ceded to the Ministry of Interior in 2020. The City Council again asks the central executive to meet the needs of more means and National Police in the municipality to cover and even expand the number of police officers needed by the National Police station in the city due to population growth and the significant volume of tourists received each season.
Five years ago the City Council made available to the Ministry of the Interior a 4,159 square meter plot of land on Latvia Street, which is located in the area of Las Mesas. However, so far the project has not materialized. Although the land was accepted by the General Directorate of Police, no steps have been taken in all these years to build this much-needed facility in the area.
These needs for more police personnel to meet the significant population increase that the municipality has experienced have been addressed by the City Council for the Local Police. For the current government team of the City Council has been a priority to provide more human resources to the Local Police Headquarters, strengthening public safety. Thus, the various public calls for employment that have been launched since 2011 have meant providing the Headquarters with a total of 58 agents. The Public Employment Offer corresponding to this year 2025 has open the call for another 9 places.
Medal of the City
On the other hand, the City Council has approved to grant the Medal of the City to the image of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, of the Real y Antigua Hermandad del Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, Santo Sudario, Santo Entierro de Jesús, Nuestra Señora de la Soledad y San Juan Evangelista. The same distinction has been agreed for the Christ of Love and the Virgin of Hope, of the Brotherhood of Nazarenes of the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, Our Lady of Peace, Holy Christ of Love, Our Lady of Hope and Mary Immaculate.
In today’s plenary session has also agreed to designate a public space in the city with the name of Our Lady of Solitude.
This recognition also occurs coinciding with the XXV Anniversary of the Blessing of the Image of Our Lady of Solitude, whose work was made between 1999 and 2000 by the Sevillian sculptor José Pérez Delgado. “The devotion to Our Lady of Solitude in Estepona not only goes back to the last twenty-five years, but comes from several centuries ago, being many brothers and devotees who over the years have been entrusted to our mother of Solitude,” stated in the proposal.
Town planning measures
In urban planning, and within the initiatives aimed at the creation of subsidized housing, as well as the protection of the buyer of new housing in the city, the Plenary has approved to provide that the transitional measures on land provided for in Decree-Law 1/2025 of 24 February, of the Junta de Andalucía, on urgent measures on housing, apply to all urban land in the municipality of Estepona.
This decree law provides for the possibility of building public rental housing on plots of public facilities, without the need to amend the planning instruments when these soils have no specific use or are qualified with the generic use of public and social interest, i.e., that are not reserved for health or educational use.
On the other hand, the Consistory will make the granting of licenses for new buildings in the municipality subject to the promoters first executing the urbanization work in the surrounding area. This was born after the City Council found that, in some cases of construction of new housing developments, the developers do not conclude in full these works corresponding to the environment, which causes a significant damage to the purchasers of the properties and the rest of the citizens.
This criterion will not be applied in cases of execution of subsidized housing due to the public interest of the same.
