Estepona City Council restores one of the largest artistic murals in Spain

The creator of this work, José Fernández Ríos, is in charge of carrying out the work, after the repair works on the facade executed by the community of neighbors.
The Estepona City Council has begun restoration work on one of the most outstanding artistic murals in the municipality and considered one of the largest in Spain. It is the work ‘Fishing Day’, made in 2014 in six blocks of apartments in the neighborhood Isabel Simón and occupies almost a thousand square meters of surface. Specifically, the works are focused on the main facade.
The repair works that, due to the appearance of humidity, had to be carried out by the community of neighbors of the block where the main facade of the mural is located, have caused damage to the painting that has now begun to recover. Only a few months ago, and coinciding with the execution of the works of the last mural contest organized by the City Council, the rest of the facades that make up this unique work were retouched.
The person in charge of the tasks is the author of the work himself, the artist José Fernández Ríos, who has experience in other large-format creations. Made with outdoor acrylic paint and enamel, the artist used the trompe l’oeil technique to play with different perspectives and recreate a sequence in which the fisherman casts a rod and catches a piece.
The work is included in the Route of Artistic Murals of Estepona that the Consistory launched in September 2012 to convert building facades in large format canvases. This initiative has provided the city, in the last decade, with a real open-air museum that offers a new way to enjoy urban art through the discovery of these creations. A total of 74 artistic murals decorate the facades of buildings in different neighborhoods and areas, bringing them to life and turning them into an additional attraction.
The City Council has so far called three editions of the International Mural Contest to continue expanding the route. In 2024 this contest distributed 27,000 euros in prizes.
