Estepona hosts this Saturday the premiere of the winning work of the IV International Symphonic Band Composition Competition
Hugo Chinesta’s sinfonietta will be performed by the Municipal Band of Estepona, conducted by the composer himself, in a free concert to be held at the Felipe VI Auditorium.
Invitations for this performance can be picked up at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center.
The councilor attached to the delegation of Culture and Festivities, Macarena Diánez; the composer Hugo Chinesta, and the director of the hotel El Pilar, Alberto Pelaez, have announced that this Saturday, March 15, at 20.00 hours, will take place in the Felipe VI Auditorium a concert in which the work ‘Estepona, the City of Flowers’ will be premiered. The piece has been the winner of the IV Composition Contest for Symphonic Band ‘Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol’, organized by the City Council of Estepona.
With the musical form Sinfonietta for Wind and Percussion Orchestra, the composition will be performed by the Municipal Band of Estepona with Hugo Chinesta himself as guest conductor in a monographic concert. Through four passages: the Labyrinth of Flowers, the Palace of Orchids, the Corpse Flower and the Plaza de las Flores, the author intends to convey the sensations to four senses of those who pass through the urban garden that is Estepona: the beauty of color, softness to the touch and fragrance, and the taste of tradition and Andalusia.
The concert will have free admission with invitation, prior collection at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center, from Monday to Friday, from 11.00 to 14.00 and from 17.00 to 20.00 hours.
The Composition Competition for Symphonic Band aims to encourage great composers to create symphonic works for band repertoire inspired by Estepona. The Consistory convened the first edition of the contest to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Municipal Band of Estepona (1940-2020). A total of eight composers of recognized national and international prestige have participated in this fourth edition. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros.
Jury
The jury of this edition is chaired by the band and orchestra conductor, composer and pianist Fernando Ferrer Martínez ‘Ferrer Ferran’; along with Óscar Navarro González, conductor, clarinetist, composer and music educator, nominated for the Goya Award for Best Original Music
(La Mula, 2013); and José María Moreno Valiente, conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Malaga.
These high-level and internationally renowned professionals have been in charge of choosing the composer with the best curriculum and catalog, in whose musical composition project reflects his vision of the city and the values of the contest are outstanding, promoting the city of Estepona, its people and its customs. To do this, they have taken into account criteria such as the composer’s career, his musical catalog, his experience and dedication to the symphonic bands or wind and percussion orchestras.
The winning works of the four competitions held, ‘Estepona, Jardín del Mediterráneo (Astabuna)’, by the composer Álvaro López Cámara from Jaén; “Estepona, el Jardín del Mundo”, by the Valencian composer Fernando Ferrer Martínez, artistically known as Ferrer Ferran; the Continuous Suite for Symphonic Band ‘Impresiones de Estepona’ by the Dutch conductor and composer Christiaan Janssen; and this last one, Sinfonietta for Wind and Percussion Orchestra ‘Estepona, City of Flowers, by Hugo Chinesta, are already part of the archive of the department of the Municipal Band of Estepona.
