José Javier García-Carpintero presents in Las Tejerinas the book ‘Por engaños perecemos’, winner of the ‘Ciudad de Lebrija’ 2024 Novel Prize.

The City Council of Estepona informs of the change of date of the presentation of the book ‘Por engaños perecemos’, by the writer José Javier García-Carpintero. The work, winner of the second edition of the ‘City of Lebrija Novel Prize’ 2024, will finally be presented on Thursday, July 18, at 18.00 hours, in the Alfonso Gil Hall of the Casa de las Tejerinas.

‘Por engaños perecemos’ is “a novel with all the ingredients of the crime novel, an interesting structure and a powerful narrative voice that manages to keep the reader’s attention from the first pages. All the pieces fit together in this plot of corruption, a portrait of a real society of which we are part, with its lights and shadows, its weaknesses and injustices. And aided by the inevitable force of chance”. This was highlighted by the jury of the City of Lebrija Novel Prize.

Published by Extravertida Editorial, in ‘Por engaños perecemos’ we find two narrative voices and three corpses.

Hector is a librarian in Estepona, a lover of literature and classical culture. He apparently enjoys a peaceful life, but a shadow from the past torments him. When he meets Marta Díaz, a mysterious woman who frequents the library, he believes he has found love again. However, this relationship involves him in a confusing plot of deceit and death. And, to top it all off, chance makes him the main suspect in a murder.

Angela Martin, police inspector, is the other voice and will be in charge of investigating this crime that spills over to Hector and that will make her relive another death, closer and painful, which happened years ago when she was a young agent in Malaga. One way or another, the past always comes back. In Ángela’s case, almost forgotten episodes of betrayal and corruption appear with force.

The lives of Angela and Hector converge in the last part of the novel, where a new corpse appears to remind us that revenge and justice are often accomplices. Hector sets out, together with his young companion Valeria, to unravel the skein that has trapped him.

Angela, for her part, does the same, pulling the threads of her memories and her mistakes to clarify not only the present crimes but also the death of the past that still haunts her.

The librarian and the inspector, two castaways of our times, collaborate unintentionally in the resolution of a case that closes some wounds and opens others.

José Javier García-Carpintero Romero was born in Seville in 1967. He studied Classical Philology. He has been a teacher for three decades at the Colegio Salesiano de la Santísima Trinidad in Seville, where he is a former student. He is currently the assistant director of pedagogy. With a clear teaching vocation, he is dedicated to transmitting his passion for culture and classical languages to his students in ESO and Bachillerato.

His desire to instill a love for the Humanities beyond the classroom has led him to promote various projects for their defense and dissemination.

For the last ten years he has directed the youth theater group Nihil Nimis, with which he performs classical plays by Greco-Latin authors and adapted or original plays on mythological themes, having won several awards in youth competitions.
