The Cine-Club kicks off the fall season with ‘La contadora de películas’, a tribute to the seventh art starring Antonio de la Torre.
It will be next Thursday, October 10, at 20.00 hours, at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center. Admission is free until full capacity
The Estepona City Council informs that the Cine-Club of the delegation of Culture will start the new autumn cycle with the screening of ‘La contadora de películas’, a Chilean-Spanish-French international co-production of 2023, directed by Lone Scherfig from a screenplay by Walter Salles, Rafa Russo and Isabel Coixet. It stars Antonio de la Torre, Bérénice Bejo, Daniel Brühl, Sara Becker and Alondra Valenzuela.
Set in the 1960s in a town in the Atacama Desert, a girl will become the storyteller of the area, where most of its inhabitants cannot afford a movie ticket.
The screening will take place next Thursday, October 10, at 8:00 p.m., at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center. It will be in the original version in Spanish.
Synopsis: Maria Margarita is a little girl who has a very special gift, an almost uncanny ability to retell movies. Her talent and passion soon extends beyond her impoverished family circle to reach the entire community. People listen to Maria Margarita with delight and amusement, to forget the harsh routines in the saltpeter pits.
The story unfolds hand in hand with relevant cultural and political events in the town’s history, such as the arrival and success of film exhibition, followed by its decline with the appearance of television. The film, which reflects the political changes that took place in the eras of Frei, Allende and the arrival of Pinochet, revives the decline of the historic saltpeter mining towns in northern Chile and reveals the incalculable memories buried deep in our historical roots; it shows how all the dreams and hopes of the common people are ultimately subject to the tyranny of fate.
The Cine Club’s fall season will continue on Thursday, October 24, at 8 p.m., with the film ‘Avant que les flammes en s’éteignent’ (Before the Flames Go Out), directed by Mehdi Fikri and released in 2023. It is broadcast in the original version in French with Spanish subtitles.
Admission to the screenings is free of charge.
