The City Council awards the first action of the plan to provide lighting to areas of the suburbs and the coastal corridor
The installation of luminaires will begin in the next few days in Ecuador Street (Valle Romano) and Camino de Montesol (uphill Padrón).
Two other phases of the project for the lighting of 15 sections of the coastal path and 11 other accesses to urbanizations are in the bidding phase.
The Estepona City Council has already awarded the first works of the ambitious special lighting plan for areas of the suburbs and the coastal corridor, which will be implemented in two years, and in which more than 1.7 million euros will be invested in this first year of 2024. The objective of this intervention program is to provide these areas with lighting in a way that prioritizes energy efficiency, so it has opted for both solar streetlights and LED-type luminaires.
The first phase of the plan, which will be executed before the end of 2024, comprises three actions. The first of these has already been awarded, the contract will be signed next week and in a few days work will begin on Camino de Montesol (uphill Padrón) and Calle Ecuador (Valle Romano). In these areas, which are the first to be worked on, solar street lights will be installed. The execution period has been set at two and a half months and the budget is 136,000 euros plus VAT.
Public lighting represents an important fraction of the electricity consumption of public entities, hence the need to increase energy efficiency in this area in order to reduce the demand for electricity. The City Council has proposed the implementation of autonomous solar streetlights as a solution to the lighting of access roads to housing developments and sections of the coastal path that currently do not have this service. With these luminaires, which incorporate photovoltaic technology, will significantly reduce energy demand and, therefore, costs in electricity billing.
In this regard, the mayor, José María García Urbano, stresses that “90% of the areas on which it will intervene will have solar panels, except for those with larger areas of shade”. He also stressed that this first phase of the lighting plan “will be continued in the 2025 budget”.
The second action scheduled for this year will focus on sections of the coastal path, where new lighting will be installed. It is planned to install 520 streetlights in 15 areas of the coastal corridor. Specifically, work will be carried out in El Saladillo, Villacana, Hotel Ikos, Guadalmansa, El Velerín, Dominion Beach, El Castor, El Cristo, Doncella Beach, Hotel H-10, Guadalobón, Elba, Arroyo Vaquero, Horizon Beach and Buenas Noches. The planned investment in this intervention is 738,636 euros.
The third action will affect the access roads to the city and urbanizations that do not currently have lighting. These are roads with access from the A-7 highway that serve as entrances to different housing developments. The project includes interventions in Isdabe, Cortes, Sun Beach, Avenida Flamenca, Boladilla, Nicola, Alberdina, La Cala, Monterroso, Guadalobón and Arroyo Vaquero. The investment for this intervention reaches 751,363 euros, and the installation of 565 streetlights is planned.
The works foreseen in actions two and three of the plan are in the bidding phase and will be awarded shortly.
At the same time, the City Council is already working on the actions to be included in the lighting plan for next year 2025, which are currently under study.
