The City Council doubles the exhibition space of the Casa de Las Tejerinas for temporary exhibits

The Consistory is committed to accommodate collections with works of great artistic quality in the rooms that for eight years have exhibited funds of the Provincial Council.

The Estepona City Council doubles the space dedicated to temporary exhibitions within the cultural center Casa de Las Tejerinas. The end of the loan period of funds from the art collection of the Provincial Council in the last eight years has been shown in this municipal facility, now leaves several rooms available. From the municipal area of Historical Heritage is committed to allocate these new spaces to temporary exhibitions but with works of entity.

So says the councilman responsible, Daniel Garcia, who explains that “the idea is that these rooms are intended for temporary exhibitions, although prolonged in time, which are ambitious and bring the visitor to works of great artistic quality”.

The provision of more square meters for new collections will also allow an internal reorganization of the spaces, leaving some of the rooms more diaphanous and giving more visibility to works such as the paintings of the outstanding realist painter José Marchá, which are part of the artistic heritage of the City Council and are shown in Las Tejerinas.

This week has been inaugurated one of the new exhibitions that, being temporary, will extend its stay in the cultural center (until May 3). It is an exhibition of contemporary art with works by artists of the generation of the 80s in Cuba, who had to leave their country and reside, for the most part, in the U.S., Spain and Mexico. It is titled ‘More was lost in Cuba-Homage to Aldo Menendez’ and belongs to the collection of Jorge Reynardus, considered a pioneer in the world of Hispanic advertising, and who occupies a prominent place among collectors of Cuban art. He is also the founder of The Cuban Art Alliance.

Fifty exhibitions in 2024

La Casa de Las Tejerinas, located in the Plaza de las Flores, continues to be a reference point for creators from different disciplines, giving space not only to renowned painters, sculptors and writers, but also to those who are just starting out and are looking for a place where they can make their work known. The center closed last year 2024 with a total of 49 exhibitions of works by local, national and foreign artists. Other cultural activities, such as literary presentations, are also held in its facilities. In 2024 alone, 36 were held.

The building, with a rectangular floor plan dating from the 18th century, was owned by the sisters Carmen and Francisca Tejerina. The latter donated it to the Hospital de la Caridad, and it was used as a care facility until the City Council took over the building. Since 2011 it has been used for cultural purposes.

The center opens its doors from Tuesday to Friday, from 09.00 to 20.00 hours; and on Saturdays, from 09.00 to 14.00 and from 16.00 to 20.00 hours, with free access.
