The City Council presents the ‘Popi, Ciudad de Estepona’ World Ham Competition, which celebrates its tenth year as a gastronomic reference point

This gastronomic event, declared ‘Event of Tourist Interest of Andalusia’, will take place from August 8 to 17 on the Paseo Marítimo.

The event includes free concerts every night by artists and groups such as Joana Jiménez, Kiki Morente, No me Pises que llevo chanclas or Mojinos Escozíos, among others.

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, the professional ham cutter, José María Téllez ‘Popi’ and the artist Kiki Morente have presented today the next edition of the World Ham Contest ‘Popi’ City of Estepona, which this year celebrates its tenth edition.

It is an event that has become one of the biggest gastronomic events in the province of Malaga in which one of the most representative products of Spanish gastronomy and also the figure of the ham cutter is put in value.

The event, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia, is organized by the professional ham cutter, José María Téllez ‘Popi’ and the City Council of Estepona, and is sponsored by the brand ‘Sabor a Málaga’ of the Provincial Council of Malaga and the Ministry of Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía.

The event will be held from August 8 to 17 on the seafront promenade of Estepona and aims to boost the ham and pork products sector and promote other agri-food products of the province. In total there will be 65 exhibitors and more than 200 professional ham cutters, making this event one of the largest tastings of these products in the world.

The organization’s forecast is that during the ten days of the event, the number of visitors will exceed the 500,000 of the last edition. The fair will be open from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and visitors will be able to purchase Iberian ham and other pork products, as well as cheeses and artisan breads. In addition, they will be able to appreciate live the work of professional ham cutters and taste the freshly cut dishes at a price of only five euros, accompanied by wines with PDO Malaga and Sierras de Malaga, and Malaga beers that will be available at all the bars.

The event is sponsored by the presenter of Canal Sur TV, Eva Ruiz, who will attend the inauguration on Friday, August 8, at 21:30 hours, in which there will be the performance of a surprise group to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the event. To complete the evening, at 23:30 hours will take the stage Joana Jiménez.

The ‘Jamón Festival Music’, the entertainment part of the event, will offer free musical performances every day from 23.30 hours. Thus, in addition to the artists who will enliven the evening after the opening, from August 9 to 17 will perform Carla Fernández and El Callelón (day 9), Álvaro García (day 10), No me pises que llevo chanclas (day 11), Long Play (day 12), La Húngara (day 13), Son del puerto (day 14), and Kiki Morente (day 15), Noche Andaluza ‘Homenaje a Triana y Medina Azahara’ (day 16) and Mojinos Escozíos (day 17).
