The Estepona Auditorium hosts a concert by the Weber State University Symphony Orchestra and Choirs conducted by Francisco de Gálvez.

It will take place on Friday, May 2 at 8.30 pm. Admission is free, prior collection of invitation at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center.

The City Council of Estepona informs that the Symphony Orchestra and Choirs of Weber State University (USA) will offer a concert in Estepona under the baton of its chief conductor, Francisco de Gálvez. It will be next Friday, May 2, at 20.30 pm, in the Felipe VI Auditorium,

The concert, organized by the Department of Culture of the Provincial Council of Malaga, with the collaboration of the City of Estepona, will begin with Hoe-Down from the ballet Rodeo, by Aaron Copland and a selection of repertoire for choir conducted by Dalan Guthrie. It will continue with the interpretation of the concerto for violin, cello and piano in C major, Op. 56 by Beethoven, under the direction of Francisco de Gálvez, with soloists Shi-Hwa Wang, violinist; César Jiménez, cello; and Yu-Jane Yang, piano.

Conductor

Born in Málaga, Francisco de Gálvez is one of the most outstanding Spanish conductors of his generation. Since 1994, when he won the First Prize and Gold Medal at the Tokyo International Orchestra Conducting Competition (Min-On), among 194 conductors from 36 countries, he has maintained a brilliant international career. Doctor ‘cum laude’ in Music and Communication from the University of Malaga, Francisco de Gálvez is Director of Orchestral Studies at Weber State University, in Utah, USA. He also maintains a great activity as guest conductor in the national and international scene, conducting orchestras such as the Orquesta Nacional de España, Utah Symphony, New American Philharmonic, Berliner Symphoniker, Zagreb Philharmonic, Saint Petersbourg Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Osaka Philharmonic, Tokyo City Philharmonic, Filarmonica di Russe Orchestra, Postdam Philharmonic, Flanders Opera Orchestra, Sinfonica di Sofia, Fort Worth Symphony, Teplice Philharmonic Orchestra, Bellevue Phil, Sinfónica de Santa Fe, Orquestas Sinfónica y Filármonica de Málaga, Sinfónica y de la Comunidad de Madrid, Ciudad de Granada, Sinfónica de Sevilla, Orquesta de Córdoba, and Extremadura, among others.

He has performed in prestigious concert halls around the world and has been principal conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Málaga and the Orquesta de Cámara de la Universidad de Málaga between 1998 and 2011. Artistic Director of the Ciclos de Música Contemporánea organized by the Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga between 1995 and 2000, he was chief conductor and founder of the Montreal Chamber Players orchestra in 1991. With this orchestra he made his first compact disc, which has been followed by others, as well as numerous recordings for Radio and TV.

He completed studies in Composition, Orchestration and Analysis, among other subjects, graduating with the highest degree of Master in Orchestral Conducting, from McGill University in Montreal. He also has a solid violin training and experience (Superior Degree-Madrid; Performing Diplome-Royal College of Music, London; Master-McGill University, Montreal). He lives with his family in the United States, where he works as Director of Orchestral Studies at Weber State University, and develops an intense program of pedagogical and artistic activities.

Shi-Hwa

Violinist

Shi-Hwa Wang’s reputation as a violinist has been bestowed upon him with concertmaster positions with several professional orchestras, including the Taipei Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan, the Ballet West and Utah Chamber Orchestras in Salt Lake City, and the Classical Music Festival Orchestra in Eisenstadt, Austria, with which he works every summer. A dedicated chamber music enthusiast, he is a founding member of the Formosan Violin-Piano Duo, the Wasatch Piano Trio, the Browning String Quartet, and the Kismarton String Quartet.

As an educator, he is professor of violin at Weber State University. He has participated as a teacher and juror in national and international courses and competitions. A graduate of Soochow University in Taiwan, Wang studied the violin with Cheu-Sen Chen. He earned his Master of Arts and Doctor of Arts degrees from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) with his professors Yuri Mazurkevich, Catherine Tate, and Peter Schaffer. As a highly sought-after musician, Wang has frequently performed as soloist, chamber musician and guest concertmaster in the USA, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Canada, and Europe.

CésarJiménez

Cello

Born in Ávila, he develops a great concert activity highlighting performances with orchestras such as the Orquesta Sinfónica de Málaga, Orquesta de Cámara de la UMA, Orquesta Ciudad de Priego and Orquesta Sinfónica Ciudad de Melilla, among others. He has premiered numerous compositions such as ‘Evocación para violoncello y piano’, by José García Román; ‘Sonata para violoncello y piano’, by Ramón Roldán; or ‘Elegía Estival’ for cello and orchestra, by José Carra. Among his recordings stand out ‘Falla-Cassadó, music for cello and piano’, together with pianist Juan Antonio Higuero; ‘Suite for Cello and 3djazz’, by Claude Bolling (2012) with the ensemble Cello4qt; or ‘Aprés un Revê’ (2016) with pianist Rafael Porras. She lives in Malaga and shares her concert activity with teaching by giving classes at the Manuel Carra Professional Conservatory of Music.

Yu-Jane Yang

Piano

Dr. Yu-Jane Yang is a Brady Presidential Distinguished Professor and Director of Piano Studies at Weber State University. She received the prestigious national Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Teacher of the Year Award in 2020, was inducted into the New York Steinway Teachers Hall of Fame (2021), received the Best Steinway Teacher Award (2022), and was named a Fellow of the MTNA Foundation (2011). Most recently, she received the prestigious Utah Governor’s Mansion Artist Award 2023, presented by Governor Spencer Cox in September 2023.

Highly sought after as a presenter, performer and master class teacher, Yu-Jane has taught numerous piano workshops, master classes and concerts in Austria, Poland, Norway, Spain, Italy, Germany, Singapore, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Canada and the United States. She also frequently participates as a judge in national and international piano competitions, including the MTNA Competition National Finals, the California and Nevada state solo and concerto competitions, the International Piano Competition for Young Artists in Washington D.C. and the preliminary auditions of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition.

Dalan Guthrie

Director of the Weber State University Choir (USA)

Dalan Guthrie earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brigham Young University and a doctorate from Michigan State University. Prior to Weber State University, Guthrie conducted choirs and taught graduate conducting classes at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Previously, he taught at Salem High School, where his choirs were selected for performances at the Utah Music Educators Association (2016, 2018), Utah ACDA (2017, 2018) and ACDA Western Division conferences (2019). He is a practicing professional tenor and has performed as a guest soloist with the Michigan State University Lansing Symphony Orchestra, as well as being a member of professional choral ensembles throughout the United States.
