The Geriatric Cabinet expands its offer with new workshops on recipes and vocabulary of Estepona

The activities, which will be taught in small groups, promote the improvement of memory, active aging, personal autonomy and the preservation of Estepona’s cultural heritage.

The Estepona City Council, through the Municipal Geriatric Office, will launch a new program of workshops aimed at people over 65 years of age, integrated within the project ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’. The main objective is to promote active aging, personal autonomy and the improvement of the physical, emotional and cognitive well-being of this group.

One of the most relevant aspects of this program will be the documentation of the knowledge provided by the elderly themselves, especially in the workshops “Recipe book of Estepona” and “Vocabulary of Estepona”. The idea is to value the cultural and gastronomic memory of the municipality and prevent the loss of this unique information, since the elderly who participate represent, in many cases, the last generation that preserves this traditional knowledge, as indicated by the councilman attached to the area of Elderly, Daniel Garcia.

The material collected will be organized and preserved as part of the intangible heritage of Estepona, contributing to its dissemination and conservation.

The initiative is aimed at people over 65 years of age and, especially, to those in a situation of loneliness or with a low level of social participation.

These new workshops, like the others that will be given on memory, arithmetic, calligraphy, reading, motor skills or art therapy, will be aimed at small groups, which will allow to offer an almost individualized attention adapted to the needs of each participant. These workshops combine cognitive and therapeutic stimulation from a playful, dynamic and entertaining approach, favoring motivation and active participation. Based on the demand generated by these new workshops, the Geriatric Cabinet will be expanding the hours of each of these activities.

The Councilor for the Elderly, Daniel Garcia, stressed that “Estepona is still committed to the welfare of our seniors, offering useful activities, close and designed to improve their physical, mental and emotional health. We want them to feel accompanied, active and an essential part of the life of our municipality”.

These workshops are part of the ‘Active Seniors: Healthy Living’ program, whose main objective is to improve the memory, mobility, social cohesion and quality of life of our seniors. The program is also completed with physical, cognitive and socio-cultural activities that seek to prevent social isolation, promote healthy lifestyle habits and improve mobility, memory, social cohesion and self-esteem of the elderly.

Thus, there will be adapted physical activities such as hiking, maintenance gymnastics, psychomotor skills, stretching and relaxation exercises. There will also be cognitive activities such as memory, attention, reading, writing, reason, calculus and therapeutic drawing workshops and, finally, sociocultural activities such as guided tours, healthy breakfasts, creation of a legacy of life, family meetings, elaboration of the local recipe book and compilation of memories and stories of the municipality.
