The ‘III Jornada de la Mujer y el Ajedrez’ will count with the participation of the FIDE Master María Eizaguerri, Spanish Chess Champion.
The event, organized by the Villa de Estepona Chess Club in collaboration with the Consistory, will be held on Saturday, March 9, from 09.30 am, at the Hotel Ona Valle Romano Golf Resort Estepona. Registration is free and open to all audiences.
The councilor attached to the municipal delegation of Sports, Luis Miguel Gil Amores; the representative of the Chess Delegation of Málaga, Ana Rocío Mercado; the director of the hotel Ona Valle Romano Golf & Resort, Iván Lorente; and the President of the Chess Club ‘Villa de Estepona’, Fernando Postigo, have presented today the ‘III Day of Women and Chess’.
The municipal representative has informed that the day, which is celebrated on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, will take place on Saturday, March 9th, from 9.30 am at the Ona Valle Romano hotel. It will be structured in two parts, one in which the FIDE Master María Eizaguerri will give a lecture in which she will analyze the keys of the traditional imbalance between sexes in the practice of chess, since only one out of ten federated players is a woman.
The second part of the Conference will include, among other activities, a simultaneous chess game, also in charge of FM María Eizaguerri.
On the other hand, the representative of the Chess Delegation of Málaga, Ana Rocío Mercado, has declared that this day was born with the aim of promoting and encouraging the practice of women’s chess.
Likewise, Iván Lorente, has shown the satisfaction of the hotel Ona Valle Romano to support women’s chess and expressed the will of his company to continue collaborating with the celebration of sport events.
Finally, the president of the Chess Club ‘Villa de Estepona’ thanked the collaboration and support of the City Council of Estepona, the Andalusian Chess Federation, the Chess Delegation of Malaga and the hotel Ona Valle Romano for the cession of its facilities for the celebration of this event.
Besides, the participation of the FIDE Master María Eizaguerri, one of the great references of the female chess in Spain, has been highlighted. As she has detailed, the chess player from Huesca is the Spanish U18 Absolute Champion in 2021, Spanish Absolute Rapid Chess Champion in 2022 and representative with the Spanish women’s team in the 44th Chess Olympiad held in India in 2022. She is also the youngest player in Spain to obtain the title of FIDE Master, and with an honorable mention to the best sportswoman in school age, awarded by the Consejo Superior de Deportes in 2022.
The Women and Chess Day is organized by the Villa de Estepona Chess Club (CAVE), in collaboration with the Estepona City Council, the Andalusian Chess Federation and the Chess Delegation of Malaga, and aims to promote and encourage the practice of chess at all levels and especially in the group of women.
