The Mayor asks the Coastal Demarcation to allow the City Council to draw up the projects for the stabilization of the beaches.

The councilor sends a new letter in which he expresses the will and available means of the Consistory to initiate the procedures for the defense of the coastline in view of the lack of planning by the central government.

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has sent to the Coastal Demarcation Andalucía Mediterranean, an agency under the Central Government, a new letter requesting authorization for the City Council to draft the work projects for the stabilization of the beaches of the municipality. This would be done, as stated in the communication sent, under the coordination and with the mandatory authorizations of the central executive and competent entities.

The alderman explains in writing the situation in which the beaches of the municipality are Esteponero, affected for years by the effects of erosion, causing problems and significant damage to both infrastructure and equipment, so urgent intervention is required for the stabilization of the coastline.

In this regard, García Urbano stresses that the City Council, under the principle of collaboration between public administrations, is willing to draft, with the supervision of the Demarcation of Andalusia-Mediterranean Coasts itself, the projects corresponding to the most affected areas.

In his letter, the mayor notes that for several years they have been holding talks with Costas about the state of some beaches and the need to draft stabilization projects on them, in accordance with the provisions of the Strategy for the Conservation of the Coast of Malaga, approved in 2022. “On the part of that Demarcation, as we have been informed, the tender documents have been prepared for three projects: Punta Plata, El Saladillo and Arroyo de Las Cañas. However, despite the time elapsed, has not yet proceeded to the planned tender and these beaches, among others, would need the completion of stabilization projects for its early implementation, “he stresses.

Estepona City Council also proposes to assume the drafting, with the supervision of the Coastal Demarcation, projects of actions to combat erosion on the beaches of Buenas Noches / La Galera, Bahia Dorada, Guadalobon, Guadalmansa, Benamara / Dos Hermanas, and Atalaya / Isdabe.

The mayor reiterates the willingness of the City Council to fully fund the drafting of these projects, so he requests conformity to his proposal, as well as indication of the

procedures required for supervision by Costas, and any other that must be activated for the successful completion of the project or projects.

The continuous storms that hit the coastline of the entire province have become a periodic threat to the coastal strip, causing numerous problems and damage with the progressive erosion of the beaches, resulting in a decline in the competitiveness of the province as a tourist destination, with the negative impact this causes to this sector of activity, strategic in the economy of this area and the country.
