necessary to alleviate traffic, to become a reality as soon as possible.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, held today in Madrid a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to address the request that the City Council has made on several occasions to open a new access to the city from the A-7 highway.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Director General of Planning and Operation of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Rosalia Bravo, and the head of the Roads Unit in Malaga, Elena Fernandez. During the meeting, the mayor has raised several issues, the main one being the need to enable a new access and exit to the highway through the area of La Lobilla or Cuesta de Ronda.
For the mayor of Estepona, this is a “priority and necessary” issue, given the mobility problems of the roads, with an A-7 highway that is already insufficient to absorb the volume of traffic, especially during the summer and vacation periods. The idea of creating this new access to the city is already a historical demand of the citizens, and aims to decongest the entrances and exits to the municipality that currently exist.
Estepona experienced a population increase of 4.6% in 2023, making it the Andalusian city with the highest population growth and the second fastest growing city in the country, according to the National Institute of Statistics. The municipality already has 80,000 inhabitants, which makes it urgent to adopt this measure, which depends exclusively on the central government, and which would alleviate the existing mobility problems.
García Urbano has expressed his willingness to collaborate with the central government in this action, even, if necessary, when it comes to paying for the project and the execution of the work.
For its part, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has expressed its willingness to study the proposal and has announced the possibility of commissioning a feasibility study of this and other points of the A-7 before the end of the year, as explained by García Urbano, who thanked the receptiveness of the representatives of the central government to the issues raised.
On the other hand, the meeting held by the mayor of Estepona with officials of the Ministry has also allowed to intensify the collaboration in the urban planning files in process with regard to the affection to the A-7 highway and the AP-7 freeway.
