The Plenary approves the procedure that makes it possible to carry out the largest IBI reduction in Estepona after achieving zero debt

The session agrees on the credit supplement that allows reaching 6 million euros to subsidize this tax to the neighbors.
The Plenary of the City Council of Estepona today gave the green light to the economic mechanism necessary to implement the largest reduction of the Real Estate Tax (IBI) that has experienced the city, which will be immediately reflected in the receipt of this 2025. The total savings for families is more than six million euros.
The economic solvency of the municipal coffers, after the liquidation of the inherited debt of more than 300 million euros, and the remaining Treasury of the financial year 2024 (of 45 million euros) allow the City Council to face an average reduction of 20% in the IBI. This is a historic reduction of this tax in the city, which confirms the commitment of the government team with families and demonstrates the responsible economic management and at the service of the citizen, as explained by the mayor of the town, José María García Urbano.
Specifically, the plenary session held today has approved a credit supplement which will address part of the subsidy to the neighbors. Part of the funds come from savings last year. The other, are about 1.4 million euros that were committed to the payment of the debt and that, having been paid in full, can now be used to lower taxes.
This reduction has been applied to a total of 37,988 receipts and the total amount of the subsidy to citizens is 6.1 million euros.
The mayor has regretted that the opposition groups (PSOE and VOX) do not defend the interests of citizens and have not supported this proposal.
With this measure, the IBI reaches in the city an accumulated drop since 2011 of 50% thanks to the measures implemented in these years. In addition, the alderman has advanced that the City Council will continue to study new reductions in municipal taxes, once it is no longer necessary to face “the mismanagement inherited” from previous governments and that has forced to allocate, every day of these 14 years, about 60,000 euros to the payment of that debt.
Another of the novelties that the City Council is going to apply in fiscal matters is the reduction of 3% in the garbage rate for citizens who make a minimum of three contributions of garbage in the clean point of the city. This is waste for which there are no special containers distributed on public roads, i.e. electrical and computer equipment, furniture, oils, light bulbs, X-rays, or clothing, among others.
It is important to note that this reduction in the receipt must be requested by the user to the Provincial Collection Board during the first quarter of 2026, by submitting an application, the receipt of the garbage fee for the previous year, and providing proof of each delivery that will be provided on each visit to the Punto Limpio.
Likewise, the Estepona Town Hall is already applying tax benefits in the garbage tax to neighbors in vulnerable situations, long-term unemployed and retired people.
