The ‘Popi, Ciudad de Estepona’ World Ham Festival kicks off with half a million visits expected

The event, held on the seafront, includes free concerts every night by artists and groups such as La Húngara, Joana Jiménez, Kiki Morente, No me Pises que llevo chanclas or Mojinos Escozíos, among others.

Estepona City Council reports that tonight, at 21.30 pm, will begin the X World Ham Contest ‘Popi’ City of Estepona, which has established itself as one of the major events dedicated to Iberian products of our country. From today until August 17, the promenade of the city will host a total of 65 exhibitors with more than 200 professional ham cutters, making this gastronomic event one of the largest tastings of these products in the world. The godmother of this year’s event will be the popular presenter of Canal Sur Television, Eva Ruíz.

The expectation that this event generates every year and its consolidation as one of the gastronomic events of the summer in the province make the organizer of the event, José María Téllez ‘Popi’, expects more than half a million visits.

In addition to vindicate the figure of ham cutters and put in value one of the most representative products of Spanish gastronomy, the event also includes free concerts every night by artists of different musical styles.

Tonight, at 11.30 p.m., it will be the turn of copla singer Joana Jiménez. The performances for the coming days are as follows: Carla Fernández and El Callelón (day 9), Álvaro García (day 10), No me pises que llevo chanclas (day 11), Long Play (day 12), La Húngara (day 13), Son del puerto (day 14), and Kiki Morente (day 15), Noche Andaluza ‘Tribute to Triana and Medina Azahara’ (day 16) and Mojinos Escozíos (day 17).

The fair will be open from 19:00 to 02:00 hours and visitors will be able to purchase Iberian ham and other pork products, as well as cheeses and artisan breads. In addition, they will be able to appreciate live the work of professional ham cutters and taste the freshly cut dishes at a price of only five euros, accompanied by wines with PDO Malaga and Sierras de Malaga, and Malaga beers that will be available at all the bars.

The event, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia, is organized by the professional ham cutter, José María Téllez ‘Popi’ and the City of Estepona, and is sponsored by the brand ‘Sabor a Málaga’ of the Provincial Council of Malaga and the Ministry of Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía.
