La Traviata’ is one of the most famous operas by Giuseppe Verdi, with libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the novel ‘The Lady of the Camellias’ by Alexander Dumas. Its premiere took place on March 6, 1853 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Although its first performance was not well received, it soon established itself as one of the most performed works in the universal repertoire.
La Traviata is famous for its emotional depth, the richness of its score and unforgettable arias such as ‘Sempre libera’, ‘Libiamo ne’ lieti calici’ or ‘Addio del passato’. Verdi achieves here a moving synthesis between human drama and lyrical music of the highest beauty. Today, it is still one of the most performed titles in the world, a masterful example of the expressive power of the operatic genre and of Verdi’s genius.
The opera tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan who falls in love with the young Alfredo Germont. However, Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, opposes the relationship for social reasons. Violetta, out of love, sacrifices herself and walks away. Only at the end, when the truth is revealed, Alfredo returns to her, but it is too late: Violetta dies of an illness.
Tickets are on sale at teatroestepona.com, and at the Auditorium box office on the day of the performance, from two hours before the beginning.
