The City Council changes the direction of traffic on two access lanes to Avenida Juan Carlos I from the highway to improve traffic flow.

In the next few days, two downhill and one uphill lane will be opened on the stretch from the fire station to the fountain traffic circle.

The Estepona City Council is adopting several measures aimed at improving traffic flow in the city, especially at the entry and exit points to the highway where the greatest complications are recorded at certain times of the day. One of them will come into operation in the next few days and consists of a change in the direction of traffic in the lanes of the section of Avenida Juan Carlos I between the traffic circle of the fountain and the Fire Station. With this change, there will be two downhill lanes (from the highway to the town center) and one uphill lane.

“This is intended to improve traffic flow at this point, given that at peak hours there is a lot of traffic in the only entry lane that exists now,” explains the Deputy Mayor for Development and Infrastructure, Ana Velasco.

The municipal workers are proceeding these days to repaint the horizontal signaling and, once these works are completed, will begin the change of direction indicated in the different lanes.

New traffic circle

In parallel, the City Council continues to work on other measures to improve traffic in the area, as is the case of the reopening, last week, the Puerta del Mar Avenue after the complex works of sanitation and water supply carried out in the environment. At the same time, the work to build a new traffic circle in the José Martín Méndez avenue is in the bidding phase with the aim of reorganizing the traffic in this area and in the next traffic circle of access to the Juan Carlos I avenue.

This is an area of the municipality with a high concentration of traffic, especially at peak hours, which also connects with the access to the industrial estate. Specifically, the new traffic circle will be located at the junction of José Martín Méndez and Alemania street.

On the other hand, the Consistory is once again asking the central government to open a new access to the city from the A-7 highway. Last November the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, held a meeting in Madrid with officials of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to address this request. Specifically, the possibility of opening a new entrance and exit through the area of La Lobilla or the Cuesta de Ronda was raised. The City Council has shown its willingness to assume the cost and execution of this infrastructure if it receives the relevant authorization from the central government.
