Estepona is chosen to host the Champions League of Football for amputees
It is the first time that a high-level international competition of this sport develops a tournament in Spain. The European Amputee Football Federation (EAFF) will hold this international event in our city from November 10 to 12.
Teams from Spain, United Kingdom, Georgia, Italy, Ireland, Poland and Turkey will participate in this championship organized by UEFA, among other entities.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, announced today that the European Amputee Football Federation (EAFF) has chosen our city as the venue for the celebration of the IV Champions League Football for amputees.
The alderman has expressed his satisfaction that Estepona can host from 10 to 12 November this important sporting event, which is the first time it is held in Spain.
“Estepona is a highly sensitive city with inclusion and with people who have a desire to overcome, so we are willing to collaborate to the maximum to make this championship a resounding success,” said the mayor, who recalled the ability of the city to attract and host top-level competitions.
He has also valued the promotional impact that will have for the city the celebration of the Champions League Football for amputees, as it has UEFA as one of the entities that are part of its organization.
Teams from different countries will participate in this edition. In this sense, the European Amputee Football Federation (EAFF) has confirmed the participation of the following teams:
– Portsmouth Amputee FC (United Kingdom).
-Paris FC (France)
– Dila (Georgia)
– Sporting AMP FC (Italy)
– Bohemians (Ireland)
– Wisla Kraków (Poland)
– Etimesgut Amputee Sport Club (Turkey)
– Flamencos Amputees (Spain), which will be the host and is the current champion of Spain.
On the other hand, the mayor said that, with the celebration of this competition, the City Council of Estepona contributes to promote and give visibility to this sport, one of the youngest of soccer. In this practice, two teams of seven players, six field players and a goalkeeper, face each other on the field. The field players have amputated lower limbs and the goalkeepers have amputated upper limbs. They all use crutches and play without their prostheses.
Weeks ago, the alderman received the General Secretary of the EAFF, Bogumila Smolarek, and the national soccer coach for amputees appointed by the Spanish Sports Federation for People with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF) to know the city and sports facilities where the championship will take place, in particular, the Athletics Stadium and the Francisco Muñoz Perez Stadium.
García Urbano thanked the organizers for their commitment to Estepona and recalled the progress made in recent years in the city to make it accessible to all, as well as the various actions that have been carried out for labor, social and sporting integration of people with disabilities or functional diversity.
