The City Council organizes the largest night chess tournament for amateurs in Spain

The contest will have a record participation of 250 people, with ages ranging from 6 to 90 years old.

The activity is part of the Municipal Plan for the Promotion of Chess, which was launched as a pioneer educational experience in the country, making it possible for all the students, born from 2004 onwards, to have received training to learn how to play chess.

The Estepona City Council and the Municipal Chess School organize the thirty-seventh edition of the night tournament of this sport, which will be held on August 10 on the promenade (next to the Post Office). This is a regular activity of the summer programming of the town, being the only competition for amateur participants of these characteristics that is held in Spain.

The Mayor of Estepona, Mr. José María García Urbano, has emphasized that Estepona is a reference for the practice of chess, and he has stressed the impulse given by the Town Hall to this discipline, aware of the benefits it brings. In this sense, he has highlighted the actions carried out to promote its practice among the citizens and its presence in the daily life of the city.

The games, which will be played throughout the night, will bring together players aged between 6 and 90 years. The number of registered players, a total of 250, is the highest ever.

In recent years, the Nocturno Ciudad de Estepona has brought together local participants and members of the municipal school, in addition to bringing together a good number of players from various parts of Andalusia and national geography. The amateur nature of this event has made it a must for fans of this discipline.

This edition will be played, as in previous years, following the Swiss system of competition. There will be twelve professional referees and a total of twenty-six trophies to be distributed among the different categories, as well as commemorative medals.

The activity is part of the Municipal Plan for the Promotion of Chess, which was launched in mid-2011 as a pioneer educational experience in the country, enabling all students, born since 2004, to have received training to learn how to play chess, a game that offers important intellectual benefits to those who practice it.

This modality exercises and improves memory, concentration, creativity and logic and even helps them to solve problems and advance in reading comprehension.

Estepona is a city committed to chess. Proof of this is that another of the actions carried out to promote it was the construction of six giant boards in the Paseo Marítimo.

Each of these structures has a surface of 20 square meters and pieces made of pressed plastic with a length of 55 centimeters. All these boards are available to the public so that they can enjoy outdoor games in front of the sea.

Throughout the summer, the Municipal Chess School will hold rapid chess games and giant games on the large-format boards of the Paseo Marítimo. As in past years, the activity “Chess for all” is free and open to all the public who wish, and will be held from July 3 to August 25, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, under the supervision of the EMAE teacher, Miguel Abril.
