The Estepona City Council informs that next Wednesday, June 19, at 21.00 hours, will take place in the Felipe VI Auditorium a concert in which will be premiered the work inspired by the city ‘Impressions of Estepona’, composed by the Dutch conductor, composer, arranger and organist Christiaan Janssen, winner of the III Composition Contest for Symphonic Band ‘Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol’, endowed with 10,000 euros.
Entitled ‘Impressions of Estepona’, and as musical form ‘Suite for Band’, the composition will be performed by the Municipal Band of Estepona in the course of a concert with Christiaan Janssen himself as guest conductor. The first part of the concert includes the interpretation of the symphonic prelude ‘La Torre del Oro’ by Gerónimo Giménez (1852-1923), under the direction of the Band’s chief conductor, José Antonio López Camacho.
The concert will have free admission with invitation, prior collection at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center, from Monday to Friday, from 11.00 to 14.00 and from 17.00 to 20.00 hours.
The Symphonic Band Composition Competition aims to motivate great composers to create symphonic works based on the town of Estepona. The Consistory convened the first edition of the contest to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Municipal Band of Estepona (1940-2020). A total of 11 international composers of recognized prestige competed in this third edition.
The jury was chaired by the band and orchestra conductor, composer and pianist Fernando Ferrer Martínez ‘Ferrer Ferran’, along with Óscar Navarro González, conductor, clarinetist, composer and music educator, nominated for the Goya Award for Best Original Music (BSO of the film ‘La Mula’, 2013), and José María Moreno Valiente, conductor of the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra.
These professionals of recognized prestige have been in charge of choosing the composer with the best curriculum and catalog, in whose compositional project the values of the contest are outstanding, promoting through his musical composition the city of Estepona, its people and its customs. For this, it has taken into account criteria such as the composer’s career, his musical catalog, as well as his experience and dedication to symphonic bands or wind and percussion orchestras.
The winning works of the three contests held are ‘Estepona, Jardín del Mediterráneo (Astabuna)’, by the composer Álvaro López Cámara from Jaén; ‘Estepona, el Jardín del Mundo’, by the Valencian composer Fernando Ferrer Martínez, artistically known as Ferrer Ferran; and the latter Suite for Band ‘Impresiones de Estepona’, by Christiaan Janssen. All of them are already part of the archive of the department of the Municipal Band of Estepona.
Christiaan Janssen (Netherlands – 1974) has been immersed in music since he was five years old. At the age of seven he entered the Muziekacademie in Gravenvoeren, Belgium, where he learned music theory and harmony, as well as trumpet and church organ. Subsequently he studied wind band, fanfare and music conducting with Pierre Kuijpers, organ with Dorthy de Rooij and symphony orchestra conducting with Jan Stulen at the Maastricht Conservatory. He also took additional courses in conducting with several well-known conductors, such as Jan Cober.
Since 1994 he has been actively conducting and is currently the conductor of two symphony orchestras and two wind bands. Since 1985 he has been experimenting with sound and has been developing as a composer, with more than 100 pieces composed for wind bands.
His works have a romantic character. Counterpoint and transparent instrumentation play a very important role. His work is influenced by great masters such as Johann Sebastian Bach, A. Bruckner and Richard Strauss. He is regularly asked to write a piece or perform arrangements for a wide variety of ensembles, from chamber groups to wind bands and symphony orchestras.
