More than 25,000 people attend the inauguration of the remodeling of Terraza Street

More than 25,000 people attended yesterday the inauguration of the remodeling of Terraza Street, one of the main arteries of the road network of the city. The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, highlighted the support of the citizens of this project that aims to strengthen commercial activity in the area and its recovery as a pedestrian axis.

The alderman has indicated that this intervention has given priority to pedestrians to run a single platform that provides a sense of spaciousness to the entire urban area, creating a uniform environment that enhances the activity of the various services and facilities that comprise.

The pedestrian is thus emphasized, improving environmental conditions and creating an environment that guarantees universal accessibility in urban mobility.

At the same time, the remodeling of this central thoroughfare promotes public space as the backbone of the city with environments conducive to ensuring a healthy life for all sectors of the population. The pedestrian prioritization of the road facilitates mobility and urban sustainability by reducing emissions and favoring air quality and space for pedestrians.

Terraza street connects Andalucía avenue with España avenue, and the area of action contemplated runs along this road from Los Reales avenue towards the sea, crossing the historic heart of the city. Specifically, it has intervened on an area of about 8,668.45 square meters, whose approximate dimensions are 600 meters in length and between 10 and 20 meters in its cross-sectional area.

The completed project has involved homogenizing the pavement and unifying the levels of the street, creating continuity along its length. The existing architectural barriers have also been eliminated, favoring accessibility and the integral remodeling of the Virgen del Rocío square has been carried out.

The work has also involved the renovation of the supply and sanitation infrastructure, the installation of new street lighting along the entire street, the installation of a structure of awnings to create shade, the presence of flush-fitting tree surrounds on the surface, reconditioning the existing tree species, street furniture, and the installation of new planters along the street at ground level for greater visual permeability and a sense of the whole. Surface parking has also been eliminated, respecting some loading and unloading areas.

The intervention in Terraza Street is part of the project of revitalization of the historic center in which the City Council of Estepona has been working for a decade, ‘Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol’, which has so far managed to integrate more than 130 streets, in all of them has opted for the conditioning of the spaces around the stores, with the aim of promoting and revitalizing social, commercial, cultural and leisure relationships.

The works, which have involved an investment of 2,085,496 million euros, have been financed by the EU’s Next Generation Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
