The City Council is putting the expansion of the traffic control system out to bid; the system will eventually include more than 400 smart cameras throughout the city

The devices will be installed at 82 locations, mostly on the outskirts of the city, which will allow for the use of new technologies to optimize traffic flow and take immediate action in the event of traffic jams or accidents. Interested companies may submit their proposals by October 8.

The Estepona City Council reports that it has put out a call for bids to expand the city’s existing network of smart cameras, with the aim of strengthening traffic control and improving urban mobility.

This project has a base tender budget of 970,410.78 euros (including VAT), and interested companies have until October 8 to submit their proposals. Bidders must prepare and submit their bids electronically through the Public Sector Procurement Platform.

Ana Velasco, Deputy Mayor for Development, Infrastructure, and Tourism (FIT), explained that more than 170 devices are scheduled to be installed, in addition to the 240 already in place. The traffic control cameras will be located at 82 points throughout the city, mostly in the outskirts.

As the councilwoman noted, this smart camera system for traffic control was already implemented in 2023, making the city a pioneer in the province due to the type of technology used. She also noted that, given the positive results in improving local traffic flow, the City Council has decided to expand the system to achieve greater coverage in various areas of the municipality.

Now, this system is set to take a qualitative and quantitative leap forward by incorporating new traffic control devices with greater capacity and improved performance. This will enable the application of new technologies to enhance traffic flow and ensure immediate response in the event of traffic jams, accidents, and other traffic-related incidents throughout the city.

The system is managed and monitored from the Control Center at the Estepona Local Police Headquarters, which will provide the necessary support to other law enforcement agencies as needed.

The smart system enables real-time connectivity, allowing all types of data and images to be displayed and stored on a central server located at one of the City Hall’s facilities, which is accessed from the Estepona Local Police Headquarters.
