The City Council is inaugurating a new public space today dedicated to Aurelio Gurrea in recognition of his career and dedication to serving Estepona

It is located across from the APRONA Foundation’s facilities, near Cristóbal Colón and María de Maeztu streets

The Estepona City Council will inaugurate a new public space today at 8:30 p.m. that will be named Plaza Aurelio Gurrea Chalé, in recognition of his outstanding social, cultural, educational, and professional work carried out over more than five decades in the municipality.

In this way, the City Council wishes to leave a permanent record of the city’s gratitude and recognition for a person whose life has been marked by service to others, the defense of social causes, the promotion of culture, and a constant commitment to Estepona.

The chosen location, across from the APRONA facilities, is highly significant, as Aurelio has always been closely associated with this foundation, which serves people with disabilities. In 1982, he was elected president of this social organization and, together with other entities in the sector, spearheaded efforts to secure grants and subsidies that ensured the continued operation of the centers and improved care for people with intellectual disabilities. More than four decades later, he continues to lead APRONA, which currently boasts some of the most advanced and important facilities in Andalusia.

“Plaza Aurelio Gurrea Chalé” is located near Cristóbal Colón and María de Maeztu streets and covers an area of 1,841 square meters.

This project has transformed this public space, making it more modern, accessible, and functional, while improving its appearance and public infrastructure. As part of the project, the paving and street furniture were completely renovated. In addition, the sewer and water supply networks have been replaced, and the stormwater drainage system has been improved through new connections and storm drains.

The project has also incorporated new functional and ornamental elements, such as green spaces, a fountain, and a drinking fountain, helping to create a more pleasant environment for the public to enjoy.

This renovation has also taken the needs of the APRONA Foundation’s users into careful consideration, with the goal of providing a more accessible, comfortable, and inclusive space for people with disabilities.
