The City Council will expand the current traffic control system with smart cameras by 82 locations

More than 170 devices will be installed, mostly on the outskirts of the city, which will allow for the use of new technologies to optimize traffic flow and take immediate action in the event of traffic jams or accidents

The Estepona City Council reports that it will soon issue a call for bids to expand the city’s existing network of smart cameras in order to strengthen traffic control and improve urban mobility.

More than 170 devices are scheduled to be installed, adding to the 240 that were installed three years ago. The traffic control cameras will be located at 82 sites, mostly in the outskirts of the city, though some will also be in the city center.

Ana Velasco, Deputy Mayor for Development, Infrastructure, and Tourism (FIT), noted that in 2023 the City Council implemented this smart camera system to manage the city’s traffic, making it a pioneer in the province for the type of technology used. She also noted that, given the results in improving traffic flow in the city, the City Council has decided to expand the system to achieve greater coverage in various areas of the municipality.

Now, this system is set to take a qualitative and quantitative leap forward by incorporating new traffic control devices with greater capacity and improved performance, which will allow for the application of new technologies to improve traffic flow and enable immediate action in the event of traffic jams, accidents, and other general traffic issues in the city.

The system is managed and monitored from the Control Center at the Estepona Local Police Headquarters, which will provide the necessary support to other law enforcement agencies as needed.

The intelligent system allows for real-time interconnection, as well as the display and storage of all types of data and images on a central server located at one of the City Hall facilities, which is accessed from the Estepona Local Police Headquarters.

In addition, provisions have been made to ensure that the entire traffic video surveillance network can be used to monitor and reduce traffic speed and density; therefore, this project includes the installation of speed monitoring points. The aim is to modify driver behavior, thereby improving both overall mobility and road safety in particular, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
